South Carolina deputy killed in what sheriff says was an ambush

Lamar, SC – An assistant trying to stop a suspect in a southern Carolina house was ambushed, killed early Tuesday while a second officer was injured, the authorities said.

The suspect of the shooting was also killed, said the Darlington County Sheriff.

Devin Mason MP and the second officer were inside a house near Lamar around 1:30 am when they were attacked, the sheriff’s office said in a statement, without providing additional details.

Mason died, while the second officer, whose name was not immediately released, was at the hospital in a stable state, the authorities said.

Cameron Ray Dennett, 25, was also killed during the shooting. He was wanted for the criminal plot, counterfeiting and a computer crime and was not allowed to have a firearm, the deputies said.

A 28 -year -old woman faced with similar accusations was placed in police custody and was not injured, the investigators said,

Mason, 27, graduated from the State Academy of Criminal Justice three months ago and had just finished training in the field last week, said the Darlington County Sheriff Michael August, in a statement.

“In his time with us, he has demonstrated unwavering dedication, integrity and professionalism,” said August, “the Mason deputy served the residents of Darlington County with heart and honor. Although his time with us is far too short, his impact will not be forgotten.”

The division of the police of the State was investigating the shooting.

Mason is the first police officer in Southern Carolina, shot in the exercise of her duties in more than three years.
