When the officials confirmed the suspect’s detention in the murder of Charlie Kirk on Friday morning, they stressed how the process went quickly.

“In less than 36 hours – 33 to be precise – thanks to the total weight of the federal government and by leading with the partners here in the state of UTAH and the government. [Spencer] Cox, the suspect was apprehended in a historic period, “said FBI director Kash Patel.

The officials attribute a “transparent” collaboration between the local, state and federal police forces, as well as some 7,000 advice from public members, with an acceleration of the search for the alleged Kirk killer.

Kirk, a conservative activist and podcaster, was fatally shot dead while he was expressed at the University of Utah Valley on Wednesday afternoon. Here is what happened next:

  • 8:29 am: The alleged suspect, Tyler Robinson, is seen on surveillance images arriving on the University of Utah Valley campus in a Gray Dodge Challenger, according to Governor Spencer Cox. He wore a brown t-shirt and bright shoes and shoes.
  • 11:52 am: The investigators are then able to follow Robinson’s movements on the campus, through the stairwells and to the roof of a building about 150 meters from the courtyard where Kirk was to speak at noon. The commissioner of the Ministry of Public Security of Utah, Beau Mason, said that the suspect – at this stage wearing dark clothes – can be seen moving through the roof towards a “shooting location”.
  • 12h23 Mt: While answering questions from the public, Kirk is struck with a single shot on the neck and collapses, according to graphic and widely broadcast videos of the incident. The crowd – which said that the officials had some 3,000 people – dispersed in a chaotic scene, with Mason, later saying that the students had run in fear and barricaded themselves in the classrooms. Social media videos, not verified by NPR, show a group of people carrying Kirk in a SUV, which took him to the regional hospital in Timpanogos. Meanwhile, according to the officials, the suspect is captured on the video moving on the other side of the building, jumping from the roof and fleeing in a neighboring wooded area.
  • 12h39 Mt: The first FBI agents arrive and secure the scene, according to Patel.
  • 12:48 Mt: Utah Valley University sends an emergency alert by saying that the police were investigating “a single shot … to a guest speaker” and a suspect is in detention.
  • 1:02 pm: President Trump shares news from the shooting of Kirk on Truth Social, while videos of the shooting circulate online.
  • 2:40 p.m. Trump confirms Kirk’s death in an article on social networks.
  • 4:00 pm Mt: The Governor of Utah Cox holds a press conference in which he calls Kirk to kill a “political assassination”. Cox says there is a “person of interest” in detention but that the investigation is underway.
  • 4:21 pm Mt: FBI director Kash Patel, said in a tweet that the “subject of the horrible shooting today who took the life of Charlie Kirk is now in detention”.
  • 5:59 p.m. Mt: Tweete patel that “the subject in detention was released after an interrogation by the police”. Mason, with the Utah Ministry of Public Security, said later that two people were placed in police custody and then released on Wednesday. One was accused of obstruction by the University of the University of Utah Valley, but Mason said that none of the two had any links with the shooting.

  • 7:00 Mt: The special agent of Mason and the FBI in charge Robert Bohls announces night breakthroughs in the survey. They say that the investigators recovered a “high power” rifle – later identified as a rifle of Mauser .30-06 caliber bolts – considered to be the weapon of murder in the wooded area near the campus, as well as an impression of shoes, a printing of palm and a printing forearm. They say they were able to follow the shooter’s movements via a surveillance video but could not verify his identity, only saying that he seemed to be “university age”.
  • 9:58 am: The FBI displays the first series of photos of a person of interest, walking in a building wearing sunglasses, a hat and a black shirt with long sleeves with the emblem of an American flag and a white pygargue. The agency orders people to share any information, photos or video via its digital tip line.
  • 10:44 Mt: The FBI announces a reward of up to $ 100,000 “for information leading to the identification and arrest of individuals responsible for the murder of Charlie Kirk”.
  • 6:17 pm Mt: The FBI publishes more photos of the person of interest on social networks.
  • 7:30 p.m. Mt: The authorities, including Patel, hold a press conference where they show photos and videos of the suspect and ask for public help. Cox says the authorities have obtained more than 7,000 tips and carried out nearly 200 interviews so far. He also says that Utah is preparing affidavits to continue the death penalty when the suspect is captured.
  • Approx. 7:45 pm Mt: Air Force Two, transporting the Kirk coffin, landed at Phoenix Sky Harbor airport in Arizona. On board are the widow of Kirk, Erika, as well as the vice-president JD Vance and the second Lady Usha Vance.
  • 7:59 pm Mt: The FBI publishes a video of the alleged shooter who jumped on a roof and flee the campus.
  • Approx. 10 p.m. Mt: Robinson is rendered by a family member and reserved in the county of Utah. COX later said that he’s close to Robinson’s relatives had contacted a friend – who had contacted the authorities – with information that Robinson had admitted or involved that he was the shooter.

  • 6:00 am Mt: President Trump appears on Fox and friends And announces “with a high degree of certainty” that the alleged killer of Kirk is in detention. Trump said that he hoped that the suspect that he was not appointed, will be found guilty and would have received the death penalty. Trump also said he was planning to attend Kirk funeral next week.
  • 7:00 am Mt: Cox, patel and other officials hold a press conference to identify Robinson and share news from his detention. Cox said: “There is a person responsible for what happened here, and this person is now in detention and will soon be charged.” The authorities stressed that the investigation – including the analysis of forensic evidence – is underway, but believes at this stage, Robinson acted alone.
