Openai has added a new conversational branch functionality to Chatgpt

OPENAI has given chatgpt users a new feature: the possibility of connecting their conversations with the AI chatbot. The apparently very requested feature allows users to explore more than one conversational path without rewriting or restoring their cats.

It is the equivalent of saying “let’s put a pin in it and return to it” when you speak to a friend. You can complete everything you talk about, then raise the idea mentioned above and also talk about it.

Except in this case, you go to the chatgpt message that you want to leave by tangent and click on “Branch in a new cat” in the list of “more options”. A parallel thread will appear with all your conversation at this point, ready so that you can take a new direction.

The original version is still there, but you can also see what the edited version would look like. The branch goes beyond that, because you can have several different layers of changes all available at the same time.

The branches can be particularly useful when you don’t know precisely what you want and think or you feel undecided. You can try it yourself without a chatgpt subscription. When you select the connection option, you will get a new conversation window, although it is only available on the Chatgpt web version for the moment.

The branch is a good way for chatgpt to allow you to change your mind in the moment. People do not always think in a straight line, and the branches allow you to try some options.

For example, it can be useful for teachers preparing several versions of a spreadsheet or a business founder trying to make different versions of a pitch discourse.

Or imagine you have a new recipe you want to try, but you feel like it could be more spicy. You can ask for a more spicy version of the recipe, but then decide that it would work better with a certain sweetness. I just burst from this previous recipe response, and you can discuss it without having to return to your original recipe and delete the spicy option.

The branch is not entirely the power movement of recent advances by chatgpt in memory, or the new agent system compatible with tasks, but all improvements in AI chatbots must be complex. This is probably why it was so largely requested and why Openai does not put it behind a payment wall.
