Chill Ambient Music Playlists Curated by Humans, Not AI

Finding authentic ambient music playlists with real human emotion can feel like discovering a lost relic these days. But luckily, a bit of a dig around Spotify, YouTube, and Soundcloud can uncover some beautifully curated playlists by users that you’re sure to like, if you’re a fan of the genre.
I’ve done all that legwork for you, so feel free to refer back to this post. For now, let’s take our hats off to the committed curators who take the time to keep real artistry alive with these ambient playlists.
The term ‘ambient music’ was first coined by the legendary Brian Eno in the mid-seventies. He wanted a name that described music that was designed to be as interesting as it was ignorable. His goal was to create music that could be listened to as calming background noise or a more focused experience, depending on the listener’s mood.

’90s Ambient Techno—Curated by Ron Poznansky
We’ll start with something a little nostalgic and go back to the ’90s. At this time, popular artists blended ambient music with genres like techno, house, and dub to create a whole new set of ambient-inspired subgenres—many of which feature on this carefully curated Spotify list, 90’s Ambient Techno by Ron Poznansky.
It starts with a slow, minimal, and atmospheric piece called Nine by British duo Autechre. This track sets up the playlist perfectly with its soft, repetitive synth melody creating a hypnotic, almost lullaby-like quality.
Further down the list, you’ll encounter classics like Belfast by Orbital with its ethereal vocal samples and The Orb’s Little Fluffy Clouds with its downtempo beats and reminiscing about childhood skies.
Darker, more psychedelic tracks, such as Mountain Goat by the Future Sound of London (under their Amorphous Androgynous pseudonym), mix things up with haunting guitar melodies, hazy synth textures, and shifting melodic fragments that create a trippy atmosphere before the playlist ends on a gentle piece with an eerie melody by Aphex Twin.
In the 1990s, ambient music (almost) went mainstream, particularly in the UK. Artists like The Orb (who had a number one album in Britain), Aphex Twin, Banco de Gaia, The Future Sound of London, and Orbital pioneered many of the ambient artists you hear today.

Ambient Space Soundscapes—Curated by Nik Davies
The curator of this Spotify list is the Bristol-based musician, composer, and producer Nik Davies. He is a serial curator who has even selected tracks for the Valley View Records compilation album, Space Ambient: floating 001.
Nik accepts submissions through SubmitHub for his playlist considerations, and he uses the artist name Applefish for his own ambient and space-themed releases, some of which appear on this playlist, Ambient Space Soundscapes.
It features 210 tracks of pure, beatless, ambient music, and it is the ideal soundtrack for drifting off or spacing out. It begins with the godfather of ambient music himself, Brian Eno, and his eternal classic An Ending Ascent from the 1983 album Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks.
If you’re interested in ambient music from the sixties and seventies, artists like Brian Eno and Harold Budd have timeless albums available for download or purchase. German electronic artists like Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze are also pioneers in the genre and have a lot of interesting work.
The playlist ends with Stars from the same timeless album, and in between, you can bliss out to tracks from classic ambient artists like Aphex Twin and Biosphere, while the curator’s own Space Walk and Andromeda tracks wouldn’t be out of place in a Chris Nolan sci-fi flick.
Other tracks, such as Eternity by Stellardrone and Stratus by Domy Castellano, will have you floating around your bedroom wondering what reality even means.

Infinite Ambient Mix—Curated by AmbientMusicalGenre
The 2016 Infinite Ambient Mix on YouTube is a DJ mix uploaded by AmbientMusicalGenre with complete track listings. It’s almost two hours of spacey tracks, starting with an absolute cracker called Ether by We Are All Astronauts, an ambient/electronic project that creates music for film, commercials, and art installations.
The track itself is inspirational, with its minimal beats and synthesized melodies building up to a crescendo of pure emotion. Cosmos by Need a Name follows perfectly, with its warm bass and background synth strings creating a sense of euphoria.
Stylistically, the tracks offer a variety of flavors, but ambience is at the heart of each one. Nothing by Flame Shapes might maintain a contemplative feeling, but it does get the toe-tapping, while Owsey’s Dancing By The Dreamless Wave floats away from pure ambience to a more housey vibe. It’s these occasional rises in tempo that may not make this playlist ideal for sleeping.
However, it’s the perfect soundtrack for studying and chilling, and the tracks always go back to themes like sci-fi landscapes and cosmic exploration with their cyberpunk and other retro influences.

Blissful Solitude: Ambient Mix—Curated by Fluidified
This 2015 YouTube playlist is blended together by regular contributor Fluidified and starts with a piece that sounds like it is about to build into an epic prog-house track. However, it maintains its ambient grounding and blends beautifully into the second track, All We Had Is Gone by Groundfold.
Around the 16-minute mark is the hauntingly beautiful Red by the Brighton-based ethereal post-rock quintet Phoria. It’s remixed by Need a Name and is one that you’ll look out for on a second listen to the playlist.
Piano melodies and colorful ambient patterns and textures fill out the remainder of this one-hour dreamscape before it slowly descends back to earth at the end with tranquil tracks from the little-known Apstract before signing off with a stirring conclusion by UK producer Stumbleine.

Ambient Chillout Lounge Relaxing Music—Curated by Relax Chillout Music
This 3.5-hour YouTube mix is a session by Jjos for Contraseña Records, a Spanish distributor that was “founded in 1991 to give a voice to new musical talents.”
Jjos is the DJ responsible for blending the tracks, too, but this one isn’t by-the-book ambient. However, the beats are still seriously chilled, and the vocals are dreamy, even hypnotic at times. Floating soundscapes, delicate piano riffs, and uplifting melodies make this one for admiring sunsets or sunrises or unwinding at home with a glass of red.
Cyberpunk elements creep in to keep things dynamic, while there are even bass riffs with slightly funky elements to get the toe tapping. Tracks are not separated, so it can be difficult to determine the names of individual tunes. Therefore, you may as well just play it, put your feet up, and enjoy.
You don’t need to rely on major streaming platforms to discover new music online, especially when you are interested in niche genres like ambient. Platforms like Bandcamp are ideal for anyone seeking something a bit different.

Music to Make Your Brain Shut Up—Curated by Nobody
This deep one-hour YouTube mix of pure ambient tracks put together by the wonderfully named Nobody is ideal for sleeping. In fact, it’s so deep and beatless that it’s just a notch or two up from background noise.
The mix begins with a disclaimer stating the channel is not monetized and a thoughtful apology for any ads that may disturb your listen. Cover art of a dark, cold forest is seen throughout the video, and it complements the atmospheric mix by evoking feelings of isolation and echoing cold, deep space.
Tracks lean toward dark, haunting soundscapes, starting in an almost otherworldly manner with They Won’t Leave by Chilean artist Unworn. The track is from the album The Empty Way, and it blends seamlessly into Far Bellow by Slovakian ambient/drone artist Ephraim Lovelace.
The dark ethereal theme continues throughout the collection, but if you somehow haven’t drifted off by the end, the last track by Mariana Trench will have you melting into your mattress.

90s Ambient Jungle Mix [5] (Intelligent DnB)—Curated by 4AM Breaks
For something a little more niche, the 90s Ambient Jungle Mix [5] on YouTube is the fifth installment in a series of atmospheric drum and bass playlists by 4AM Breaks.
The beats and low-frequency rhythms may be a little too toe-tapping to help you meditate or fall asleep, but a listen to this one-hour mix is undoubtedly a pill that will help you chill. The rhythmic drums and rolling bass are cushioned by waves of ambient drifts and melodies to create a tapestry that guides listeners’ senses and transports them to another realm.
It starts with the landmark number Atlantis (I Need You) by DnB master LTJ Bukem. It’s a track that is often cited as the definition of intelligent drum and bass, with its jazz and breakbeat elements accentuated by smooth ambient washes.
The curator blends rather than mixes the tracks together, ensuring each tune has an individual voice, and the second track, God Chord by Bjorn, sets the scene for the rest of the mix with its hypnotic cosmic textures.
However, this is a drum and bass mix first and may not appeal if it’s pure ambience you seek. That said, it is full of tracks that masterfully blend jungle rhythms with those sought-after dreamy soundscapes, so it definitely has its place, even if you usually think kick drums are a crime against tranquility.
Drum and bass emerged from the UK’s rave scene in the early nineties. It focused on fast breakbeats and heavy basslines and was not particularly related to ambient music. However, as the “90s Ambient Jungle Mix” shows, breakbeats and ethereal pads do coexist. If you’re interested in more melodic DnB with ambient influences, you can search for ‘liquid drum and bass’ on music platforms.

Atmospheric Dub Techno Mix – Ambient and Chill—Curated by Harrison Divecha
Another YouTube playlist that can’t really call itself ambient music in the classic sense is this deep selection of tracks compiled by Harrison Divecha. Atmospheric Dub Techno Mix – Ambient and Chill is simply a beautiful collection of downtempo techno and deep house with ambient undertones that ensure your bones will be so profoundly chilled that you had better beware of getting up too quickly afterward.
It’s another playlist that blends rather than mixes, but the lack of true transitions between tracks isn’t off-putting, and it ensures each tune stands out on its own. Beats are restrained, and the playlist is big on atmosphere. There are also beautiful, beatless moments where the listener can pause for reflection, while kick drums do drift in and out slowly and gently.
Atmospheric pads and swells keep the listener transfixed throughout, and by the time you get to Forest Dub by Runo toward the end, you’ll be so relaxed you may not have the desire to start another playlist, which is just as well because this is the last one. Sweet dreams.

Psybient: Chill Psychedelic Space Ambient—Curated by Applefish
Nik Davies uses his Applefish pseudonym on SoundCloud to deliver the epic playlist, Psybient: Chill Psychedelic Space Ambient. The curator includes a number of his own tracks in the listing, but it starts with the wonderfully contemplative Frog by Carbon Based Lifeforms. This soothing track leads into the more cosmic sounds of Blue Airglow, a collaboration between Applefish and Spacecraft.
There are almost 100 tracks on this blissful playlist, and in true ambient style, there is barely a beat. Layers of synths and atmospheric drifts take the listener on a true journey through the stars. Just hit play and let the tracks guide you on your trip, whether you’re meditating, drifting off, studying, or simply chilling.
Each of these ambient playlists serves up different vibes. So, whether you’re looking for a sound sleep, focused study, or peaceful meditation, pick one based on your needs. If it works for you, make sure to explore the featured artists and share them with others. Supporting both these dedicated curators and the talented musicians they champion keeps ambient music alive and feeds our souls.
