According to Erin Merani, Hatch’s vice president of marketing, this series of events was not, in fact, a planned marketing stunt, and Hatch is still coming to terms with the ramifications of demonic talk. While Merani is happy that the ads and programming “caught people’s attention,” she wants to make it clear that they were all for fun, and she’s encouraged by the number of users who rushed to Hatch’s defense.

“We’ve seen a lot of community members react in the comments and say, ‘Wait a minute, we missed the plot here!'” she says. “It’s a Halloween-themed commercial where their product for adults (not babies) is actually what will save you from true evil: your phone. Your phone keeps you up at night.” To be clear, Hatch makes two devices, one specifically for kids and one for adults. Any pop culture references, like Dusk, are for adults only via Hatch’s Restore 2 and 3 devices; they are not accessible on the Hatch Baby.

Then, about 48 hours later, a new trending topic appeared: “If you’re thinking of throwing away your Hatch device, send it to me.” »

Hatch took it and ran with it. “We took cues from the community and kind of rode this wave with this idea of, ‘Hey, we know this is happening, and we wanted to address this while also emphasizing having a little fun with this,’” Merani says.

Enter Hatch’s new “Repossession Program.” “We saw a lot of people wanting to be ‘taken back’,” says Merani, “so we were able to direct people to our refurbishment program, so we could keep these devices out of landfills and return the units ‘taken back’.”

So far, Hatch has received more than 10,000 inquiries on social media about receiving “seized Hatch devices” and only 10 requests to return Hatch devices to the company.

Finally, if you own a Hatch device and would like to return it, you can contact customer service to arrange a return.
