NASA astronaut, Nichole Ayers, took this photo from the San Francisco Bay region in California surrounded by cities in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, and their suburbs on August 3, 2025. At the time, the international space station was in orbit 260 miles above the golden state.

The international space station serves as a unique platform to observe the land with practical and automated equipment. The station crew members produced hundreds of thousands of images, recording phenomena such as real -time storms, observing natural events such as volcanic eruptions when they occur, and providing contributions to soil staff for the programming of automated earth detection systems.

During its third decade of human presence continues, the space station has a large -scale impact as a microgravity, demonstrations and scientific investigations technology from a range of domains. The research carried out on the orbit laboratory will inform long -term missions such as Artemis and future human shipments in Mars.
