I wish to offer my strong support for the city manager proposal described in Alderman Carl Franco’s letter to the Aurora Beacon-News published on Sunday, Nov. 2.

With the exception of a short stint teaching high school social studies and middle school language arts, my 25-year career in local and regional government included assignments with the South Suburban Mayors and Managers Association; the city of Missoula, Montana; the Will County Land Use Department; and 13 years with the city of Aurora (1999-2012).

During those years, I was a member of the International City/County Management Association https://icma.org/, the Ely Chapter of Lambda Alpha https://lai.org/, and the American Planning Association https://www.planning.org/. My career and memberships in these organizations were driven by my deeply-held personal values regarding the importance of professional government management.

In jurisdictions led by professional managers/administrators, staff members come to their jobs with proven experience and credentials, and with a commitment to non-partisan execution of their assigned duties.

I hope that residents of the city of Aurora will hear Alderman Franco’s concerns, educate themselves about the city management form of government and support an ordinance to bring that proposal into being for our community.
