Cleveland wants to challenge ECR, Birmingham for City soccer title

The West Valley League men’s soccer competition was dominated by El Camino Real and Birmingham. The two schools usually end up competing for a city title.
Now Cleveland, under second-year coach Julio Chacon, is trying to disrupt the ECR-Birmingham football dynasty.
The Cavaliers enter Wednesday’s league opener against El Camino Real with an 11-2 record. Anderson Carranza has 10 goals.
Chacon, a Cleveland graduate, has tried to give his team the confidence to compete with City’s defending champion El Camino Real and longtime powerhouse Birmingham.
“I’m trying to build a new culture,” he said.
This is the first season in years that City’s title hunt appears wide open. Sylmar owns a win against Birmingham and Southeast is 14-1-2, including a tie against Birmingham.
El Camino Real faces a big week, with matches against Cleveland, then Birmingham on Friday. On Saturday, ECR passed its first test with a 5-0 victory over Sylmar.
