A man was mutilated to death by two dogs while working in an animal refuge in Mississippi, local media reported.

The employee, Clifford Phillips Jr., 57, was trying to put a dog in an already busy pen when he was attacked, said his friend to Wreg from Memphis, Tennessee. The incident occurred on July 17 at Second Chance Animal Alliance.

“A dog was already in a pen and he was trying to put another dog in there and the other dog tried to run out,” said Dudley Woods. “He tried to hold him back with his foot and this dog caught his leg, pulled him down. And then the other dog jumped with him.”

Woods said one of the dogs was a pit-ball and that the other was a “mixed race in the pit”. He said the incident was filmed on a security video inside the refuge.

The Yalobusha County Sheriff department immediately responded to a request for comments on Thursday.

The refuge declared in a press release of July 25 that it was “devastated by this loss”.

“It’s been a week since the death of our friend’s refuge and employee Cliff Phillips. … Although we cannot answer all the questions or rumors that we saw last week, we cooperated with local officials,” said the refuge. “Please know that we are taking the safety and security of our volunteers and employees seriously. We are proud of the work we do in our community and will remain vigilant when we continue to do.”
