Anker recalls 500K iPhone power banks, discontinues fire-risk devices after investigation
The main manufacturer of technological load accessories, Anker, recalled near the half-million popular electricity banks due to “a potential manufacturing problem” which increases the risk of overheating, fusion, smoke or fire. Some of the power banks have been marketed with iPhone users, including devices with Magsafe compatibility and integrated lightning cables.
In total, around 481,000 units are affected and subject to recall and reimbursement. Anker says that “the probability of malfunction is considered minimal”, but the company “launches a voluntary recall by abundance of prudence”. All the affected products have also been removed from the sale and interrupted. A US investigation by Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed around thirty reports on fire and explosion incidents associated with the aircraft.
Anker declares that the recall affects the lithium-ion battery cells provided by a single supplier and included in five PowerCore models sold on several markets. Anker products are available in more than 146 countries. In addition to the CPSC, Anker is coordinated with the regulatory authorities in all regions to ensure that the recall is carried out “in accordance with all the applicable local directives”.

- Anker Zolo Power Bank (20k, 30W, integrated USB -C cable) – Model A1689

The owners of affected electricity banks are invited to immediately stop using the unit even if the device seems to work normally and, once the reminder eligibility has been confirmed, to arrange it in a certified installation which accepts the recalled lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries have a higher risk of fire than ordinary batteries, which is why only the smaller batteries under 100 years are allowed on the plane. More information on the elimination of lithium-ion batteries is available at the American environmental protection agency (EPA).
