The secretary of health and social services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has spent years spreading the safety of vaccines and linking them to autism.

Dozens of studies have demystified theory, but it has nevertheless persisted for years. Part of the reason why autism diagnoses have been skyrocketing in recent decades.

Dr. Allen Frances is the psychiatrist who led the working group which created the fourth edition of the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, which has widened the definition of autism, which, according to him, could have played a factor in this increase.

Autism rates have exploded in recent decades. Could the clinical definition of autism itself be partly to blame?
