Coroner releases identities in apparent murder-suicide in Merrillville

The Lake County Coroner’s Office released the identities of the two people who died in a likely murder-suicide in Merrillville on Friday.

Officers were called at around 8:15 a.m. February 27 to the 7600 block of Van Buren Street for a firearm assault, according to a department release. There, they found a man and woman dead inside the house, the release said.

Merrillville resident Felicia Jenkins, 48, suffered a gunshot wound in an apparent homicide, according to the coroner’s release.

Portage resident John E. Jenkins, 53, died of a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, according to the release.

Forensic autopsies were performed on Saturday at the Lake County Forensic Center, 2900 W. 93rd Ave. in Crown Point.

A preliminary investigation shows that it was a domestic event and that there’s no further danger to the public, the release said. Merrillville Police Chief Kosta Nuses said the investigation is ongoing.
