Costly extreme dorm makeovers redefine back-to-school shopping
The sending of a first -year student to university is almost always an expensive company, but the latest viral trend is to make back to school to school to the next level.
The makeover of extreme dormitories are becoming more and more popular, some parents depict tens of thousands of dollars and the hiring of professional interior designers to transform the humble home of their children into dormitories of their dreams.
Far from being far from the beaten mini-fdridges and twisted posters of the past, dramatic transformations are not necessary, some say, and reflect the extended line between the wealthy and the destitute in the United States
“The disparity of wealth becomes evident on a university campus, because suddenly, your lifestyle is funded by you, that is not the case,” said Mya Mendola, graduate of The University of Minnesota Last year.
Nevertheless, transformation videos are everywhere on Tiktok, showing dormos of the dull first year and not decorated with luxurious oasis. Crystal chandeliers, plush bedding and monogrammed pillows overflow in small spaces.
“They are far from their home for the first time,” said Shelly Gates, designer of professional dormitories. “They need their own comfortable small space.”
Gates, who owns Mary Margaret Designs, an interior design company in Mississippi, has become viral for its developed room transformations. His dormitory makeover videos have collected hundreds of thousands of views online, showing the shocked reactions of his customers in their unrecognizable rooms.
“My final goal is not to be on Tiktok,” said Gates. “It is not to show these creations, but my goal is always that moms are happy and girls to be happy.”
She continued: “Elderly people like me grew up in dormitories that were literally cells in Cinder Block prison, and now our children are age to go to university, and we don’t want them to have this experience.”
Viral makeover is not only for girls. Some parents transform the first year rooms of their sons into a full -fledged cave with play chairs, brick wallpaper, leather sofas and neon signs.
A market for the conceptions of developed dormitories has increased since 2020, when Tamara Wingerter and Stephanie Knight started the dormitories of the Mississippi Facebook group and beyond to share their extravagant renovations.
Wingerter, who now has her own business, said she had seen conceptions from $ 500 to $ 20,000.
“If someone has a budget of $ 100,000, I mean, I have never seen one, but you never know,” Wingerter said. “People drop it during a birthday party, so why not for nine months?”
After countless vision paintings and complete online shopping baskets, Wingerter says that its favorite part is to see the reaction of the students when a part is finished.
“The university is quite difficult. It is such a great transition for our children, why should we not have their rooms somewhere where they are comfortable and happy who express their personality? ” said Wingerter.
Mendola, the recent university graduate, said that extravagant dormitories were not like what she had at school.
“Everyone had a funny, cool and interesting theme,” said Mendola. “No one was going for aesthetics.”
“That makes you ask – she continued – what level of individuality comes in your room in relation to which level you organized online? Perform a certain self -expression, because so many things are based on what is cool on the internet?”
Mendola and Megan Stout, a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 2018, said they were shocked to hear what some people paid for renovations.
“I bought at Target. I got the $ 5 mirror on the ground,” said Stout. “I think our futon at the time was like $ 100. So nothing crazy.”
Stout said that she had not seen the interest of spending so much money in a “concrete block dorm”.
“Twenty thousand dollars is literally a deposit!” She said. “There are always families who can afford more and buy their children more.”
