Travelers across the United States are facing unusually long lines at airports, as hundreds of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents have resigned while others continue to miss paychecks and call in unemployment amid a partial government shutdown.

BBC journalist Christal Hayes was returning home from her honeymoon and was caught in the chaos, reporting waiting times of more than four hours. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were on hand to control the crowd.

US President Donald Trump said he would sign an executive order ensuring TSA officers are paid “immediately”, which could provide temporary relief, but it remains unclear what authority the White House could invoke for such a move. The U.S. Senate passed a partial funding bill to pay for the TSA on Thursday evening, but it still needs to pass the House.
