Deadly monsoon day as rains kill 28 in Pakistan’s Punjab province
On Wednesday, at least 28 people were killed due to heavy monsoon rains in the largest province in Pakistan, in the midst of more rough time warnings for the South Asian nation.
“The deaths were caused by the collapse of the roofs, especially in the rural areas of the Punjab,” said Farooq Ahmad, spokesperson for the provincial rescue service. Ahmad said that around 90 people had been injured.
Punjab is the largest province in Pakistan where millions of people are associated with agriculture and live in villages. The rains are considered to be blessings during the season, but they also cause the collapse of mud houses.
The number of deaths due to the monsoon rains this year crossed 150, while more than 300 people were injured in weeks of erratic rains that started on June 26.
The meteorological department warned that more heavy rains in July and August would inflate rivers, sudden floods and floods.
Pakistan, a country with a massive population of more than 240 million, is one of the nations most vulnerable to the impact of climate change, according to the United Nations.
Each year, hundreds of people lose their lives because of the climate -induced disasters in the country, thousands of others losing their houses and their livelihoods.
In 2022, the record floods that left more than 2,000 deaths, left a third of Pakistan overwhelmed and caused $ 40 billion in economics.
