A school bus driver was killed Thursday morning after she was pinned between two buses outside a Delaware middle school, officials said.

The shocking incident happened shortly before 7 a.m. in the parking lot of Gauger-Cobbs Middle School in Newark, Del., NBC Philadelphia reported.

Delaware State Police said in a statement released Thursday morning that officers were investigating “a serious accident” in the school parking lot, adding that no students were injured.

The driver, later identified as Wanda Montalvo de Garcia, 54, was participating in a routine evacuation drill when she became trapped between the two buses, school district officials told WPVI, a local ABC affiliate.

Montalvo de Garcia reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest shortly after emergency services arrived on the scene. She was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, but was later pronounced dead.

Investigators have not shared any additional details about the incident.

“They can’t give a lot of information,” the victim’s son, Roberto, told NBC 10. “All they can say is the bus cornered her, they were doing a safety inspection, she went to the back of the bus, the other bus coasted and hit her.”
