Those of us on the sane side of the political spectrum always take considerable delight in polling that shows the Democrats in trouble, in issues, in elections, in, well, anything. We are human, after all, and no less susceptible to the joys of schadenfreude than anyone else. Now there’s a new survey that shows a majority of Democrats are tired of the antics of the wackadoodle wing of their party, and are wishing for a return to a more left-of-center party, as opposed to today’s far-left peanut gallery.
California Governor Gavin Newsom suggested during a recent CNN appearance that to win again, Democrats need to become “more culturally normal.” In response to this obvious point, far-left commentators accused Newsom of betraying the party’s values and ceding moral ground to the Right.
The backlash was predictable—and, if you look at the data on who Democrats are, absurd. Most Democratic voters aren’t radical. But the party is run by people who are, and who have built institutions to ensure that their preferences dominate.
A new Manhattan Institute survey of nearly 2,600 Democratic voters and 2024 Kamala Harris supporters offers the most granular look yet at this disconnect. Contrary to broadly held assumption, the Democratic base is not a caricature coalition of socialist revolutionaries and woke militants. The activists are there, but they are a minority—and not a particularly large one.
In the survey, a plurality of respondents (38 percent) said that their party should move toward the ideological center. Just 22 percent supported shifting to the left. Democratic voters also said, by a greater than 2-1 margin, that future party leaders should prioritize effective governing over fighting Donald Trump and Republicans.
That’s as may be, but is sure looks like the freakshow wing of that party is the squeaky wheel that’s getting all the grease.

All one needs to cast some doubt on this is to look at Democrats in Congress: The shrieking Squad, the Room-Temperature IQ Caucus that includes such intellectual giants as Representative Maxine Waters (CA-43) and Senator Mazie Hirono (D-HI). There are exceptions – Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) comes to mind – but they are increasingly being outpaced by the freaks, and even such Democrat veterans as Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are being absorbed by the freaky blob.
These Democrats surveyed may not like the far-left nutbars. But those are the people who seem to keep getting elected.

My late father voted Democrat for many years. He described himself as a Truman Democrat, and he grew up during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt. But Dad started to change in the Reagan years, which was about the time that the national Democrats started going off the rails. Barack Obama, to listen to both of my parents, was the last straw for them voting for Democrats: A man with no experience, no perceivable talents, and very little apparent intelligence, who was put up by the Democrats because of his skin color.
Things have gotten much worse. But now it turns out that quite a few other Democrats are getting tired of the never-ending freakshow that leftist activists are putting up. There’s an opportunity here for Republicans, if they are savvy enough to take advantage of it.
