Democratic governors vow court fight as Trump sends National Guard members to Oregon

President Donald Trump sends members of California and Texas to the National Guard in Oregon after a judge temporarily prevented his administration from deploying custody of this State in Portland, and the Democratic governors of California and Oregon committed themselves on Sunday to fight this decision before the courts.

Oregon and California were waiting for a hearing of a federal judge on its order to temporarily prevent the Trump administration from deploying California National Guard troops in Portland, Oregon. The same judge prevented the administration from deploying the Troops of the Oregon National Guard on Saturday in Portland.

A spokesperson for the Pentagon said in a statement that 200 federal members of the California National Guard who were in service around Los Angeles were reassigned to Portland. Oregon governor Tina Kotek said that around 100 arrived on Saturday and that 100 others were on Sunday.

Kotek said that there had been no formal communication with the federal government on deployment. The office of the governor of California Gavin Newsom said that about 300 members before the California guard could possibly be deployed.

Defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, wrote in a memo who was submitted to the court according to which up to 400 members of the staff of the Texas National Guard were activated for deployment in Oregon, Illinois and perhaps elsewhere.

Texas governor Greg Abbott said in an article on X on Sunday evening that he had authorized the call. “You can either fully apply the protection of federal employees, or move away and let Texas Guard do so,” he wrote.

Oregon events intervene one day after the Governor of Illinois made a similar announcement on the troops of his activated state.

Kotek said the last decision of federal officials is an attempt to circumvent the decision of the court on Saturday which blocked the deployment of members of Oregon.

“Oregon fields have not changed,” Kotek said at a press conference on Sunday. “There is no need for military intervention in Oregon. There is no insurrection in Portland, there is no threat to national security. ”

The Attorney General of Oregon, Dan Rayfield, said that his condition, as well as the city of Portland and California, asked for a modified temporary ban on the deployment of national guard troops.

“What was illegal yesterday is illegal today,” said Rayfield. “The judge’s order was not a minor procedural point so that the president could go around, as my 14 -year -old child does when he does not like my answers.”

Rayfield has added that Oregon “will not be part of the president’s attempt to normalize the use of the American army in our American cities.”

Newsom, a Democrat, said in a statement that Californian staff were on Sunday and qualified the deployment of “mistreating the law and power”. He said that these troops were “federalized” and were put under the control of the president ago on his objections, in response to unrest in Los Angeles.

“The commander -in -chief uses the American army as a political weapon against American citizens,” said Newsom.

California has also joined the Oregon trial contesting the deployment by the Trump administration of the National Guard personnel in Portland as an illegal and unnecessary surpassing.

Three hundred staff members of the California National Guard deployed in southern California had already been federalized until early November, and the leaders of the California military department had learned that the 300 of these “will be deployed imminently in Portland”, according to the modified complaint filed on Sunday.

Trump deployed California National Guard troops in Los Angeles in June to enforce immigration law and has no legal grounds to redeploy them in Oregon to another goal, the judicial file on Sunday.

“They cannot continue to hold federal members of the National Guard by modifying their mission and sending them to another state,” said the file.

The trial notes that the president has the power to deploy national guard troops in very specific circumstances: repel an invasion, delete a rebellion or apply federal laws.

“There is no rebellion in Portland,” said the file.

In a related judicial file, a lawyer for the military department of California said that the northern command of the US military had informed the department on Sunday that an order would be made by maintaining the staff of 300 Guard federalized until the end of January.

The American immigration building and customs application in Portland has recently been the site of night demonstrations. A federal judge committed to Trump in Oregon temporarily blocked the Trump administration plan to deploy the Oregon National Guard in Portland to protect federal goods in the midst of demonstrations after Trump called the city “ravaged by war”.

Oregon officials and Portland residents said the description was ridiculous. The demonstration was relatively small and located in a single block in the city of 650,000 inhabitants, Kotek said.

US District Judge Karin Immergut, appointed by Trump during his first mandate, made the ordinance pending other arguments in a state and city trial. She said that relatively low demonstrations did not justify the use of federalized forces and that the deployment authorization could harm the sovereignty of the state of Oregon.

The California Attorney General Rob Bonta said that the president “specifically targets cities that lean democrats” or have leaders and residents who denounce the abuse of power of the administration.

“It is our National Guard, the California National Guard, and not the Royal Guard of Trump, as it seems to think,” said Bonta at a Sunday evening press conference. “Trump cannot use our military troops as his own personal police forces.”

The mayor of Portland, Keith Wilson, said on Sunday that he had seen federal agents engaged in what he described as an unjustified use of force and spray without discrimination pepper gas and an impact on ammunition during a demonstration outside the installation of ice.

“This is an aggressive approach that tries to ignite the situation that has otherwise been peaceful,” said Wilson.

Portland alerted the Civil Rights Division of the Ministry of Justice to the actions of agents, Wilson said.

Trump characterized both Portland and Chicago while cities go upmarket with crime and troubles. Since the start of his second term, he sent or spoke of sending troops to 10 cities.

Trump authorized the deployment of 300 troops from the Illinois National Guard to protect officers and federal assets in Chicago on Saturday.

The Office of the Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker said that the situation in Chicago “does not require the use of the military and, consequently, the governor opposes the deployment of the National Guard by virtue of any status.” Pritzker has not received any call from federal officials about the deployment, said his office.
