Members of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Democratic Socialists of America orbit discussed cultivating relationships with Chinese Communist Party officials and tailoring messages to avoid topics “sensitive to Beijing,” according to internal meeting minutes reported Tuesday.

Newsweek said it reviewed “dozens” of documents dating back to 2021, including meeting minutes and documents describing trips to China. The documents show participants discussing outreach to Chinese officials and pro-China advocacy labeled “anti-imperialism.” (RELATED: Mamdani’s progressive coalition already embroiled in bitter race war)

“China wants to interact with the DSA,” a New York-based political activist said at a meeting of the DSA China working group on October 8, according to the minutes. “If we develop a two-week itinerary, hire locals and develop more ties with the CCP. [Communist Party of China]then we are golden.

The minutes described participants urging the organization to avoid hot-button issues for the Chinese government — including China’s threats to invade Taiwan, its security crackdown in Hong Kong and abuses against Uyghur Muslims — while continuing contacts related to China’s ruling party.

Chinese officials were not present at the meetings themselves, Newsweek reported, but met with the American participants in China and encouraged “formal exchanges.” This included an August 2025 trip to Guizhou, where visitors were greeted by officials from a Communist Party school.

Internal discussions welcomed Code Pink’s advice to “stay out of the weeds” on sensitive China-related topics, according to the minutes. Separately, the minutes also cite a participant in the 2021 meeting as saying that “one million Uyghurs [are] being brutalized in Xinjiang” are “an exaggeration”.

Newsweek said neither the DSA international committee nor Mamdani’s New York City office responded to requests for comment. Mamdani was not recorded as having attended any of the meetings in the documents reviewed.

Asked about contacts between the DSA, the Mamdani administration and the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Newsweek that “local exchanges and cooperation” are “the important component of China-US relations.”

DSA national leadership publicly celebrated Mamdani’s victory and highlighted the role of NYC-DSA members as campaign staff and volunteers.
