Democrats in Maine Are Going Too Far — Even for Them – RedState

Well, you may have heard the news recently out of Maine: Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Graham Platner, the wealthy Bernie Bros veteran posing as a “Maine oyster farmer,” may be a real Nazi?

Which sets Platner apart from a conservative dishonestly labeled a Nazi by Democrats and/or the mainstream media.

The main evidence that Platner may be a Nazi comes from the fact that he has a tattoo in the shape of a Totenkopf, or “skull” symbol, on his chest. This tattoo, which was adopted by Hitler’s SS during the Nazi era and became particularly associated with the branch that guarded the concentration camps, is normally worn by actual Nazis.

Now, Platner claims that while he was in the army, drunk, having fun, he and his comrades decided to get a tattoo, and he didn’t know what the tattoo meant when he chose it. Others, however, strongly dispute his story.

In a recent interview, Platner stated that he was “not a secret Nazi”, leaving open the possibility that he was in fact an “open Nazi”.

We probably should have found out about Platner’s Nazi status sooner. We may have noticed that Platner spends a lot of time focusing on the supposed “evils” of Israel and the Jews, which is usually a good indication that a person may be a Nazi.

Furthermore, we should have noted that Platner is a member of a socialist shooting club and that contrary to Soviet propaganda which still obscures the truth for the mainstream media, the Nazis were left-wing socialists. The Nazis’ official name was “National Socialist German Workers’ Party” and the party controlled/directed the decisions of German businesses, although, unlike the Communists, it did not nationalize businesses.

Certainly, it is not clear that Graham Platner is a “nationalist,” as someone who favors the United States over other nations. So, maybe instead of being a Nazi, he’s just an “international socialist” who hates Jews? Or maybe he’s the communist he also claims to be. Communists also often hate Jews (see Stalin).

None of this Nazi news means Platner is out of the running for the Democratic Senate nomination. He’s not the establishment’s favorite, of course — he’s Janet Mills, the state’s 77-year-old governor, whose opposition research team almost certainly revealed Platner’s dirty little “secret.” But Platner is probably second in the primary right now and could still win; being a real Nazi is not a compromise for the Democratic base.

Now let’s talk more about the U.S. Senate race in Maine.

Maine: Susan Collins / 50.98% R / Lean R

Susan Collins is a 72-year-old, five-term Republican U.S. Senator from Maine. It is a return to another era; the only Republican senator who represents a solidly Democratic state. Collins is widely known for being a moderate Republican and has consequently developed a unique popularity in her home state.

In 2020, Collins won by a solid margin in a presidential year where Donald Trump lost the state by a margin of 53% to 44%. Every poll that year showed that Collins was going to lose this race (with some showing her losing substantially).

Three leading Democrats hope to challenge Collins in 2026. I’ve already mentioned Mills and Platner; the third is Jordan Wood, a former aide who worked for the nastiest former Democratic congresswoman, Katie Porter. Mills has raised $1 million, while Platner has over $4 million and Wood has over $3 million.

We know how the Democratic primary is going to end: a vicious fight. “Socialist” (i.e. communist) Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) – who supported Platner – has vowed revenge against the “corrupt campaign finance system” and Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who brought Mills into the race and funds his opposition researchers. Schumer opposed Platner because Platner had pledged to vote against Schumer for leader.

This leaves Jordan Wood in a great situation. Platner can be expected to turn all his fire toward Mills. Mills, no doubt, will respond the same way. Wood, meanwhile, can expand on his positives by producing fluffy ads showing him being nice to people while hating Trump, and watching his opponents’ negatives skyrocket.

This is exactly how the Feingold maneuver works. In 1992, it ended with Russ Feingold, who had started as a nobody behind two other prominent opponents in Senate primaries, winning 70 percent of the Democratic vote. But is this how this Democratic primary will end? Maybe, but there’s a good chance Platner and/or Mills will notice Woods avoiding the mud and throw him into the action. And then all bets are off.

The winner of the June 9, 2026 Democratic primary will then face Senator Collins. While the primary campaign is underway, Collins is accumulating money. It has $6.7 million in cash, having raised $1.2 million in the last period. Collins, as chairwoman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, can also be expected to pump federal funds into her home state to sponsor all sorts of grassroots projects.

That’s exactly what former Democratic Sen. Bob Byrd of West Virginia did, and it solidified him in the Senate during his final years, when he was barely conscious and his party was losing its appeal with the state’s voters.

Collins has also mastered the ability to become “the crucial, deciding vote” in the Senate and use that status to appeal to his constituents. I recognize his unique talent, having previously observed something similar up close when I worked for former Senator Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania. But unlike my former boss, Collins is known for siding with the GOP when it counts, according to my other former boss, former Republican Sen. Rick Santorum (PA).

Each of the Democrats has their own weaknesses that Collins can exploit. Mills is older than Collins and has committed to serving only one term, thus conceding the seniority argument. Additionally, older candidates tend to be less energetic. Woods is a longtime Washington, D.C. swamp resident and congressman who lives in a $3 million Bristol mansion with his husband.

And Platner, of course, may be a Nazi.

Unless the economy deteriorates significantly, I suspect Susan Collins is destined for a record sixth term in the U.S. Senate.

Editor’s Note: Schumer’s closure is here. Rather than putting the American people first, Chuck Schumer and radical Democrats forced a government shutdown on health care for illegal immigrants. They own that.
