Germany deported 19,538 people in the first 10 months of this year, around a fifth more than in the same period last year, the Interior Ministry reported on Sunday.

The increase compared to the first 10 months of 2023 is even higher, at 45%.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, in office since the beginning of May this year, told the Bild newspaper on Sunday: “It’s about control, guidance and clear lines when it comes to migration policy, and that also applies to returns.”

Dobrindt added: “We will continue to follow this path consistently and are preparing deportations to Syria and Afghanistan.”

Late last month, Dobrindt said negotiations on the expulsions between representatives of the German government and the Afghan Taliban government were nearing a conclusion.

Markus Söder, head of the Bavaria-based Christian Social Union (CSU) and a key partner in Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s coalition government, said on Saturday the aim was to organize “next year an expulsion offensive which then has to take place”.

Speaking after a closed-door CSU meeting in Munich, Söder specifically mentioned Syria and Afghanistan. He also proposed a dedicated deportation terminal for Munich airport.
