Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers released the following details during a press conference at noon Friday:
A woman was about to evict her son from a home in the Bermuda Club, a gated community near Vero Beach.
Three deputies and a locksmith were in the entrance of the house.
The homeowner’s son, Michael Halberstam, 33, who was facing eviction, went to get a gun in another part of the house, Flowers said.
Halberstam opened fire on two deputies as well as the locksmith, the sheriff said.
Victims of the shooting included:
-
MP Terry Mashkow, 47 years old: Deceased . She worked at the IRC Sheriff’s Office for 25 years, starting as a dispatcher
-
Deputy Tino Arizpe: A bullet in the shoulder; ran into the garage after being shot, but he will survive
-
Locksmith (name withheld): Was also shot; At last report he was in surgery and was in critical condition
Flowers said a third deputy who was on scene was not hit by gunfire. He shot the suspect, injuring him.
Halberstam, at last report, was in surgery and in critical condition.
Flowers said the suspect’s criminal history includes a narcotics charge in 2006 and an assault (misdemeanor) charge in 2015, both out of the state of Virginia.
The sheriff said there have been seven calls to this Governors Way residence in the past month, almost all of them from the suspect’s mother.
Flowers also said the suspect was fired from his job at UPS — and also posted negative comments on a social media account about the Indian River Sheriff’s Office.
Flowers said investigators are also looking into whether Machkow’s shots hit the suspect. He said Friday’s shooting was only the second on-duty death at the Indian River Sheriff’s Office in the last 100 years.
