The Detroit Lions are bringing back one of the most productive free agent signings of the 2025 season.

Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin is reportedly joining the Lions on a one-year deal worth $4 million, according to NFL Network. Ya-Sin’s agency confirmed the signing on social media.

Ya-Sin, 29, joined the Lions on a one-year deal last offseason and became an important part of the secondary, appearing in all 17 games while making six starts in place of injured cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and DJ Reed. Reed missed six games with a hamstring injury, while Arnold was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury on December 1.

He had a career-high nine pass deflections and 47 combined tackles. Ya-Sin’s opponent passer rating when targeted was 76.6, also a career high. The move brings much-needed depth to a position group looking to rebound from a difficult 2025 season.

What is Rock Ya-Sin’s place in the lineup in 2026?

In an ideal world, Ya-Sin will start next season in the same role as this year: as a high-level substitute. Reed, a veteran cornerback who signed a three-year, $48 million contract last offseason, is hoping to have a bounce-back season after being derailed by a significant hamstring injury in 2025. Arnold’s status with the team is a bit uncertain after his name appeared in a court order related to an armed robbery and kidnapping.

While it doesn’t seem like the starting lineup has a spot for him at the moment, that could certainly change. There’s a slight potential he could compete with Ennis Rakestraw — who has yet to show the ability to stay healthy — for the nickel cornerback position after Amik Robertson agreed to terms with the Washington Commanders on Monday. But Ya-Sin has rarely appeared in the slot in his seven-year career, so it’s not something we expect.

Do the Lions still need to add a cornerback?

In addition to the players mentioned above, Detroit also has Khalil Dorsey and Nick Whiteside, two players you wouldn’t trust to start the entire season, but two players who could hold up in a pinch. The signing of Ya-Sin leaves the Lions with six cornerbacks and no clear starter at nickel, plus the uncertainty of Arnold.

The Lions could, in theory, have Ya-Sin take over for Arnold long term if needed, but that would immediately erase their plus-level depth. So we expect the Lions to continue looking for another cornerback or two in free agency, whether to compete with Rakestraw at nickel corner or simply to add to their depth on the outside – or both.
