Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin has denied reports that Gregory Bovino has been relieved of his duties as head of the Border Patrol and operational commander of Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

“Chief Gregory Bovino has NOT been removed from office,” McLaughlin said. wrote in an article on

McLaughlin’s post comes after several reports surfaced that Bovino had been sidelined, days after a shooting involving a Border Patrol agent took place, resulting in the death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti.

McLaughlin did not say whether Bovino would remain in Minnesota to oversee the high-visibility operation in Minneapolis, where two residents were killed by federal agents amid provocative riots led by far-left radicals.

Conservative journalist Nick Sortor revealed in a post on X that he had “learned” exclusively that Bovino was “relieved of his duties”.

“MAJOR BREAK: Gregory Bovino has now been RELIEVED of his duties as commanding general of the U.S. Border Patrol, I have learned exclusively,” Sortor wrote.

A DHS official and “two people with knowledge” of the matter reportedly told the Atlantic that Bovino would return “to his old job in El Centro, California”:

Gregory Bovino has been removed as “commander-at-large” of the Border Patrol and will return to his old job in El Centro, California, where he is expected to retire soon, according to a DHS official and two people with knowledge of the change.

Bovino’s sudden demotion is the clearest sign yet that the Trump administration is reconsidering its most aggressive tactics following Saturday’s killing of Alex Pretti, 37, by Border Patrol agents under Bovino’s command.

In an article on Truth Social, President Donald Trump revealed that he had spoken to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D) and that they “seemed to be on the same page.”

“Governor Tim Walz called me and asked me to work together regarding Minnesota,” Trump said. “It was a really good call, and actually we seemed to be on the same page. I told Governor Walz that I would have Tom Homan call him and that what we’re looking for is any criminals that they have on their hands.”
