President Donald Trump shocked many on Saturday when he openly celebrated the death of the former FBI director Robert Muellerdeclaring himself “happy” shortly after the news broke.
Mueller’s family confirmed Saturday that the former special prosecutor had died at the age of 81. MS NOW was first to report Mueller’s death. His death followed a years-long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
“Robert Mueller just died. Well, I’m glad he’s dead. He can’t hurt innocent people anymore!” the president wrote on Truth Social.
Mueller was the special prosecutor who oversaw an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Mueller ultimately concluded that Russia interfered with the intention of pushing Trump for its own benefit. Trump has often attacked Mueller and called the investigation a “witch hunt.”
Critics were stunned by Trump’s message Saturday, even with his history with Mueller. Most simply shared Trump’s post without commenting on it, but even some conservatives had to comment on how callous the post was.
Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume argued that Trump’s message was unnecessary and that was the exact reason why some people “hate” him.
“This is the kind of thing Trump does that makes people not only oppose him, but hate him. There was no need to say anything,” Hume wrote on X.
More regular critics of Trump have called the post everything from “disgraceful” to “embarrassing” to “despicable” to “disgusting.”
“The President of the United States is disgustingly celebrating the death of Mueller simply because he denounced Trump’s efforts to steal the 2016 election,” Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) wrote on X. “Mueller and Trump represent the polar opposites of what a public servant should be.”
MS NOW Ken Dilanian also called out Trump over his post, highlighting Mueller’s military service.
“At a time when many young men, including President Trump, were trying to avoid serving in Vietnam, Mueller not only volunteered for the Marines after graduating from Princeton, he spent a year waiting for a knee injury to heal so he could serve,” he wrote. “I always found that to be the most compelling fact about him.”
