New York Times journalist Jeffery C. Mays said that the candidate for the Democrat mayor in New York in New York, Zohran Mamdani, has become socialism is his “belief to treat people more equitably” in an article published on Saturday.
Mays argued that Mamdani opponents “derogative” qualified the hope of mayor as a “socialist” and a “democratic socialist” in order to bring his survey numbers, despite the fact that Mamdani is a member of the national democratic socialist in America (DSA) and its local New York section.
“The closest to Mr. Mamdani goes to socialism is in his belief in treating people more equitably,” said the journalist.
Mamdani’s incapacity to go back these positions could cause a calculation in the Democratic Party: “ Harning to five alarms’ ”

Mamdani’s opponent, former governor Andrew Cuomo, DN.Y., said last week that “New York people are not socialists” and that New Yorkers would not resonate with the message of the self-proclaimed democratic socialist.
“In fact, in fact, Mr. Mamdani,” said Mays. “He is a democratic socialist, which means that his beliefs are similar to those of the socialists but not exactly the same.”
The Times Reporter added that last week, the mayor Hope said that his platform differs from local and national DSA platforms.
Mays continued to break the differences between socialism and democratic socialism, and said that Mamdani’s plans to pay its proposals, such as the supply of free buses and childcare in New York, thanks to growing taxes, are “nothing close at a distance from a socialist control of private societies”.

Although Mays argued that Mamdani is not a socialist – and that democratic socialism is not the same as socialism – he noted that the DSA of New York describes itself as a branch of the national group, which qualifies the “greatest socialist organization” in the country and that the candidate of the mayor is a member of the two.
Mays also pointed out that Mamdani had approved the DSA of New York for the mayor and that he was part of the “Socialist in office” group of the DSA during his stay in the New York State Legislative Assembly.
However, Mamdani’s past remarks have fueled the claims of his opponents. In 2021, Mamdani attended a conference of young democratic socialists on the socialists where he urged participants not to compromise on objectives such as “seize the means of production”.
“Right now, if we are talking about the cancellation of students’ debt, if we are talking about Medicare for all, you know, these are problems that have the wave of popular support through this country,” he told conference lovers in a video. “But there are also other problems that we believe firmly, whether it is BDS or whether it is the final objective of seizing the means of production, where we do not have the same level of support at the same time.”
