Dodgers bullpen is a mess. Can Roki Sasaki’s return provide relief?

Dave Roberts often refers to his hierarchy of the enclosure of lifts as something of a “tree of confidence”, with branches of successors in which he can trust in the lever points.
Currently, however, it looks more like a ratatated indoor plant. Sterile, exhausted and long from the sun.
During the season, the 4.33 era of the Dodgers enclosure ranked 21st of the majors. Since the beginning of September, this issue has increased to a superb brand of 5.69. Closer Tanner Scott converted less than a third of his backup opportunities, his time went to 4.91 after his last merger on Tuesday. The best right -hander Blake Treinen had been the losing launcher in each of the five defeats of the Dodgers before that, sending his time to a 5.55 in career.
Many others have been responsible for incompetence at the end of the Dodgers match. Kirby Yates has flopped as a signing of the veteran offseason. Michael Kopech fought by injuries and a reliable lack of command. Recruits like Jack Dreyer, Edgardo Henriquez and Ben Casparius since moved have regressed after promising lightning earlier this summer. And the solitary strengthening that the front office has acquired to what is now like a deadline for unfortunately silent trade, Brock Stewart, is not sure to come back from an annoying shoulder problem.
It leaves the Dodgers only one full -time emergency arm with an ERA of less than 3.00 this season – Alex Vesia, which has a brand of 2.62 in 66 appearances.
He transformed the last days of the regular season into a full -fledged man hunting, even for the least options of confidence qualifying series.
“What does that mean?” Manager Dave Roberts said when asked what describes as “confidence” at the moment. “This means that guys who will take the mound with conviction. It will be on the attack. This will throw strikes, quality strikes and compete. And be ready to live with any result. ”
On Wednesday, this is the backdrop in which Roki Sasaki joined the active alignment of the Dodgers – the 23 -year -old recruit launcher in gross and developing, leaving an absence of five months due to a shoulder injury, returning in the hope of providing a paralyzing Tree of Roberts with an unexpected member.
Sasaki’s return was not supposed to be so important. Until a few weeks ago, his disappointing first season seemed likely to end with a visit to minors.
However, in the past 15 days, circumstances have changed. Sasaki rediscovered a 100 -half life on his quick ball. He excelled in two relief appearances with triple-a Oklahoma City. And suddenly, he seemed to be a potentially better alternative to the names that failed that have failed several times on the list of Big League of Dodgers.
Thus, the Japanese phenomenon is back, activated from the IL before Wednesday’s match while Yates, who has a 5.23 MPM this year and slipped after-season plans of the Dodgers, was placed on the IL with a tension with the hamstring.
“I just think [he needs to focus on] Give everything he has for a round or two at a time, and let the performance take place, “said Roberts about Sasaki.” I’m going right after the guys and being on the attack. “”
The renewal of Sasaki began earlier this month, when he went to Arizona after four poor departures in an assignment of rehabilitation to the minor league to work with the organization’s development coaches.
At that time, Sasaki had lost his enticing speed, barely threatening 100 mph since his debut supplied by adrenaline in Tokyo in March. His command was just as trembling, on average more than 5 ½ goals out of nine rounds in his first season in the United States. Even his mixture of pitch required an examination, after his arsenal with rapid predominance of bullets / separators was hammered in the two majors (where he had an MPM of 4.72 in eight departures to start the season) and the minors (where he had an era of 7.07 in his first four beginnings of rehabilitation) by strikers who could too easily differentiate his stuff.
“Me, he and his translators went to the laboratory and sat and watched the video for a few hours, and I just talked about,” said Rob Hill, the Dodgers throwing director who worked with Sasaki in club installations in Arizona. “It was not as much to resolve this plan, a master plan or other. It is more than helping the things he saw. ”
In the opinion of Hill, Sasaki’s mechanics had suffered from a shoulder injury which, even before this year, had tormented it since its last season in Japan.
While the two watched the film, Hill said he found differences between the things Sasaki “almost thought he was doing” in his delivery, but did not deal in the way he really launched the ball.
“I think many things come from his change of body, the way he launched because of the injury for a few years,” said Hill. “He knew what he wanted to do, but he couldn’t quite exploit the way to do so.”
What followed was a series of mechanical adjustments that brought back Sasaki’s rapid ball around 100 and its brand separator to more closely reflect his four runners when he left his hand. Sasaki has also added a cutting cursor, giving it another weapon with which to confuse the strikers and induce a softer contact.
When the right -hander returned to the minors, he withdrew eight strikers on a solid departure of 4 rounds and three points on September 9. He then impressed by two aimless appearances in relief last week, after the club’s leaders asked Sasaki to experiment with the surveys’ enclosure.
Now he joins the Dodgers for the last five games of the season. The team hopes that their small recent size sample has made it an option to relief in a legitimate playoff series.
“I guess it is right to say that I will just throw it back on the merits,” said Roberts about how he will use Sasaki in the future, noting that there are not many “low effect” opportunities in a end -of -season division race.
“If we expect it to potentially present itself for us in the playoffs, they shoot a side of the sleeves. So, I do not think that we are going to flee to put it in any place.”
There is a good chance that Sasaki will not be a remedy for the misfortunes of the Dodgers at the end of the game. A launcher of such a small experience and development uncertainties is anything but a lock to publish zeros in the playoffs.
However, the team will take all the aid to the enclosure of the lifts it can obtain. Already, Clayton Kershaw was made available for relief appearances and could present lever squares at the end of the round in October. Emmet Sheehan will also join the Mix of the Lights Enclosure, the playoffs, probably as a multi-manche Opt to reproduce with beginners.
In the meantime, the club is even looking for a few more reliable arms – only one or two branches of the hierarchy tree of the enclosure of the surveys in Roberts.
It was not supposed to be so. The sudden need for dodgers for someone like Sasaki is a reflection of the underlying defects on the list. But he will try to play a potentially critical role in a recruited season which once seemed lost.
“He was in the pen for the Triple-A team, and he was really good,” said Roberts. “So I can’t wait to see it with our club.”
