ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta United beat coach Ronny Deila’s winner a day after the season-ending finale in this summer’s conference.
Deila was helpless alone in a campaign.
Atlanta United CEO and president Garth Lagerwey said he immediately launched a global search to find a replacement.
“It was evident that our level of play was not being accomplished this season, and with our senior team leadership, we decided that, in the best interest of Atlanta United, to take the team in a different direction,” Lagerwey said in a team statement.
“Ultimately, we owe our fanatics a much better product in the field and our unwavering commitment is to deliver it to this community before it becomes possible.”
Lagerwey expressed his gratitude to Deila “for her time and compromise with the organization and we wish the best in her future endeavors.”
The season ended with a 1-1 match on Saturday night with DC United in the final appearance of veteran goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who announced his departure from the Martes.
Deila was signed by Atlanta United on December 20, 2024. The move was for Deila to return to Major League Soccer three years after being guided by New York City FC to the 2021 campeonato.
At Deila, he landed a three-year contract to replace Rob Valentino, who was appointed internal coach after leaving Mexican Gonzalo Pineda in June 2024.
Atlanta United enjoyed immediate success after entering La Liga in 2017, made the playoffs in its temporary debut, and won the Copa MLS the following year, while setting numerous La Liga attendance records.
Atlanta has not won a trophy since the 2019 season, when it won both the US Open Cup and the Champions Cup, in addition to reaching the MLS Eastern Conference final.
