Driverless Tesla Robotaxi spotted in Austin
Austin’s Tesla Robotaxis are finally doing what they were always meant to do: drive themselves without a human behind the wheel.
A Tesla Model Y was recently spotted driving on one of Austin’s public roads without anyone behind the wheel or in the passenger seat.

Tesla robot Optimus falls and goes viral
While this may be scary to some, it’s basically the same thing that Alphabet’s Waymo has been doing in Austin for years now. The biggest difference, however, is that Tesla uses seemingly unmodified Model Y cars, the same ones you can buy as a personal car, while Waymo relies on heavily modified Jaguar I-Pace vehicles.
Crushable speed of light
Until now, Tesla’s Robotaxi fleet in Austin has operated with a human safety monitor in the driver’s seat, but that appears to be changing soon.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the company is testing fully driverless Robotaxis, writing on X: “Testing is underway without any occupants in the car.”
In November, Musk said he expected “robotaxis to operate without safety drivers in much of Austin this year.” The year is coming to an end, but judging by this latest development, the company might just meet the deadline.
