Mexico (AP) – A Maya train focused on tourists that takes place along the Mexican Yucatan peninsula derailed on Tuesday while it was slowly stopping in a station, the train line said in a statement. There was no injury.

The train extended from the Caribbean seaside resort of Cancun to the capital of Yucatan Merida when it left the tracks at Izamal station.

The passengers were transported the rest of the path by bus. The accident was the subject of an investigation, but the train operated normally between other stations, according to the press release.

Photos and videos broadcast online showed a car on the slopes, leaning but not overturned.

The Mayan train was a huge project inherited from former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. He started running at the end of 2023, but produced an prompt.

López Obrador had forced the project before studies on environmental impact or feasibility were completed. Ecologists have documented serious impacts on delicate caves systems under the train line which provide a large part of the drinking water from the peninsula.

López Obrador had said that tourists would use it to start from Cancun and explore the entire 950 miles (1,500 kilometers) to visit the Mayan archaeological sites that dot the peninsula.

So far, a large part of the traffic has been on short sections between the city of Merida and Cancun.
