Electing Zohran Mamdani NYC Mayor Would Spur Huge Cop Exodus, Rising Crime Straight Out Of ‘Gotham City,’ Cops Say

A New York City led by socialist Zohran Mamdani would spark a two-pronged breakdown in public safety — soaring crime and mass NYPD defections — experts and veteran officers told the New York Post.
Despite Mamdani’s late campaign reversal insisting he won’t “defund the police” or shrink the department, critics say it’s mere political theater aimed at undecided voters, the New York Post reported. 2. Release all the criminals from prison
3. Don’t prosecute crime

Scott Munro of the NYPD Detectives’ Endowment Association told the New York Post “The city would be totally unsafe … I go to bed and worry about the phone ringing. I’m worried about my members getting killed,” Munro said.
“You put a guy like him in there, our people are going to get hurt, and nobody’s going to want the job. It’s going to put recruitment back five more steps.”
NYPD brass fear a wave of resignations unless Mayor Eric Adams or GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa upsets the race. One officer told the Post “I’ve had guys call me and say ‘If he wins, I’m quitting.’ It’s just weird that New York City would vote for him. I know he’s not here for the police.”
A 20-year NYPD veteran decried Mamdani’s portrayal of the force. “This guy thinks the entire NYPD is racist … I think right now the department is more diverse than it ever was before. He’s completely clueless … he’s just going off a narrative that if you hate cops you’re going to get elected.”
Mamdani wants to create a new Department of Community Safety and shift 911 responses to mental health teams and violence interrupters. “He’s trying to take the existing police department and turn them into social workers,” Sliwa told the Post. “Cops would not be able to function… to protect us, to go out there and grab those who are committing crimes and … have them locked up.”
Under current Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the NYPD has seen major crime drop 2% year‑to‑date and 8% since 2019. But one detective fears a Mamdani administration would transform the city into a perilous “Gotham City.” “It’s hypocritical of Mamdani to accept police detail protection while disliking the NYPD,” the detective said. “You have police protecting you, but you don’t want to protect the people of New York City?”
Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf dismissed the mayoral hopeful’s promises as duplicitous, telling the Post “His supporters say he’ll defund the police … that’s who he is, and that’s what’s gonna happen, and we can’t afford to lose a single cop.”
