Elise Stefanik Suddenly Ends Campaign For New York Governor

New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik abruptly suspended her campaign Friday afternoon to unseat Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
Stefanik said she made the decision to drop out of racing after spending time with her family over the holiday season. The New York Republican cited a potentially bruising primary against Nassau Warden Bruce Blakeman to justify her withdrawal from the race. “I am truly humbled and grateful for the historic and overwhelming support from Republicans, conservatives, independents and Democrats across the state for our campaign to save New York,” Stefanik said in an article on X.
“However, as we have seen in previous elections, even if we would have won this primary overwhelmingly, it is not an effective use of our time or your generous resources to devote the first half of next year to an unnecessary and prolonged Republican primary, especially in a tough state like New York.”
Stefanik also announced that she will not run for re-election to the House in next year’s midterm elections.
