The Barnard College of the University of Columbia settled on Monday a legal action brought by several Jewish students who accused the school not to do enough to protect students from harassment.

In order to achieve the regulations, Barnard agreed not to meet or negotiate with the anti-Israeli demonstrators and said that complaints of Jewish students would be serious, according to the law firm representing the students. Columbia has become the Hotspot of violent anti-Israeli demonstrations since the start of the Hamas war against Israel on October 7, 2023, with demonstrators who even took a campus building and allegedly held an employee of the university hostage.

“Anti -Semitism, discrimination and harassment in any form whatsoever is contrary to the values of the Champions of Barnard College,” said Barnard College president, Laura Ann Rosenbury, in the press release. “Today’s regulation reflects our continuous commitment to maintain a safe, welcoming and inclusive campus for all members of our community.”

Barnard has also agreed to hire a title VI coordinator to ensure that the school complies with the civil rights law, according to the press release. The college will also implement compulsory anti-discrimination training for all students and staff.

Barnard and Columbia did not respond to the request for comments from the Daily Call News Foundation.

The trial was brought against the Barnard College and the administrators of Columbia in June 2024, alleging that the school “selectively applies its policies to avoid protecting Jewish and Israeli students against harassment, hiring of professors who support anti-Jewish violence and spread anti-Semitic propaganda and ignore the plaidory of Jewish and Israelis students.

“Barnard’s commitment to take significant measures to combat anti -Semitism demonstrates his leadership in the fight against anti -Semitism and the maintenance of the rights of Jewish and Israeli students,” said Marc Kasowitz, lawyer for the complainants, in the press release. “These commitments are not only the right thing to do, but are essential to create a welcome and inclusive campus for all members of the Barnard community. I encourage other colleges and universities to do the right thing and follow the example of Barnard. ”

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators frequently demanding that schools disinvesting from Israel, Barnard also reiterated that his endowment “is not a vehicle to express political positions” and said that he would not use it to penalize a country, according to the press release from the law firm. Columbia remains in an ongoing battle on its federal funding with the Trump administration because of its alleged failure to fight against anti -Semitism on the campus. Despite the restraint of the administration immediately, the federal government has revoked millions of the school and is now aiming for its accreditation.

The Ministry of Health and Social Services (HHS) in May revealed that Ivy League University “failed” to respect its own policies concerning the response to complaints from Jewish students and to apply sanctions to students engaged in vandalism and illegal and disruptive protests on campus.
