Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and owner of X, has protested against the Spanish proposal to ban the use of social media by teenagers. This comes as European countries change their policies in the face of growing technology. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has pledged to protect children from the “digital Wild West”, drawing direct criticism from Elon Musk.

Elon Musk calls out the Spanish Prime Minister

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has promised to protect children from the “digital Wild West” and hold tech companies accountable for hateful and harmful content. On Tuesday, the Prime Minister said urgent action was needed because social media was a “failed state where laws are ignored and crimes are tolerated”.

Sanchez also said Musk’s platform amplified misinformation about his administration’s decision last week to regularize 500,000 asylum seekers and undocumented workers. He also pointed out that Musk himself was a migrant in the United States (via The Guardian).

The Tesla CEO then hit back at the Prime Minister, accusing him of being a “tyrant”. He wrote on X: “The dirty Sánchez is a tyrant and a traitor to the Spanish people. About an hour later, he added: “Sánchez is the real fascist totalitarian.”

So far, no other social media platforms or their representatives have spoken out on the Spanish project.

According to a survey, around 82% of Spaniards believe that children under 14 should be banned from social media platforms.

Reports confirm that Greece is another country very close to implementing something similar. Britain and France already have a tougher stance on social media use, and it appears Spain and Greece are adopting similar policies.

Australia has already banned children under 16 from accessing social media. It appears that with more countries joining, this could soon become a standard for many other countries around the world.
