So, as you probably missed, here’s what the town hall was: a religious revival disguised as a current event. It was also a mission statement from Weiss, executive editor of CBS News, and David Ellison, owner of its parent company, Paramount Skydance.

All was revealed in a remarkable sermon from Kirk, a literal come-to-Jesus moment that wouldn’t even have been followed in the secular days of CBS’s Walter Cronkite. Bob Milgrim, a viewer whose daughter Sarah was killed in a horrific act of anti-Semitic violence in May, asked Kirk to condemn anti-Semitism, Holocaust denial and anti-Zionism. It was reasonable. Also strange. Why ask about an anti-Semitic hate crime when the subject is political violence, sparked by the assassination of Kirk’s non-Jewish husband, Charlie, a Christian nationalist? Kirk answered the question calmly.

“I will pray for you,” she said to Milgrim. “It sucks, right? Hate is hate. It’s evil. Charlie and I have always been very clear about our position: Israel, the Jewish people. It’s horrible… What healing factor comes from hating Jews? What healing factor comes from hating Christians?… Charlie always said very clearly: Hatred of Jews was brain rot.”
