Volcanic activity at the Hayli Gubbi volcano in northern Ethiopia has calmed days after an eruption. Sunday’s eruption left villages covered in ash and caused flight cancellations in the Middle East to South Asia. Villages in the Afar region were covered in ash, with residents coughing and livestock unable to find clean water or grass. Airlines canceled dozens of flights on Monday and Tuesday, including 11 by Air India, due to ash clouds disrupting flight paths. Health authorities dispatched medical teams to help affected residents. One geologist explained that Ethiopia’s location on an active rift system makes such eruptions possible. The ash cloud moved across the Arabian Peninsula and India and was heading towards China.
