Even With Limits on ICE, ‘I Can’t Support Additional Funding’

On CNN’s “The Source” Friday, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) said the proposal from Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Tom Suozzi (D-NY) to limit ICE while funding DHS is not enough because “we can look separately at what needs to be done on ICE. But I can’t support additional funding for ICE, which already has $75 billion, which harasses Americans, which is harassing immigrants.
Host Kaitlan Collins asked, “Do you have a position on this proposal that Brian Fitzpatrick and Tom Suozzi, two of your colleagues, one a Republican, one a Democrat, want to put forward, who would do all of this, who would pay for all of these things? It has limits that people wanted, that Democrats wanted on ICE, like not letting them wear masks when they’re on the street, and that’s something that even Brian Fitzpatrick, he’s a Republican, has said he supports here last night. Is this something you would vote yes for?
Khanna replied: “No. Look, I like Brian Fitzpatrick. He often acts in good faith. And we can look separately at what needs to be done on ICE. But I cannot support additional funding for ICE, which already has $75 billion, which is harassing Americans, which is harassing immigrants. I heard testimony from an American child, [sixteen years old] he was told he was being strangled, with one American mother saying she was going to have her head ripped off and that ICE was a better guardian of her children than she was. It’s disgusting. So I cannot vote, in good conscience, for another new dollar. And that’s why the Senate resolved it, along with Thune and others. And they said, okay, let’s fund everything else. And that’s what we should vote for [on] in the House. »
