‘Everyone’ Will Try to Go to Center, But the Internet Is Forever

During an interview broadcast Saturday on “NewsNation Prime,” Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) responded to a question about California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) trying to move to the center and whether it’s the right move for the party by saying that “Everybody’s going to move to the middle.” [forget] that the Internet exists and all the clips and all the crazy things that they said or did,” and responded to a question about whether Newsom will see his past positions come back to bite him by stating that “everyone will have” that problem.
Host Natasha Zouves said, “We’ve seemingly seen Newsom move more toward the middle on hot-button issues. » After playing a clip of Newsom talking about men in women’s sports with Charlie Kirk, she asked, “You alluded to that earlier. Do you think moving to the center really has to be the right move for the party going forward, whether it’s Newsom or anyone else?”
Fetterman replied: “Everyone is going to put themselves in the middle. But people [forget] that the Internet exists and all the clips and all the crazy things that they said or did, it’s going to bring in about 20 or 30 million dollars that can get you those things. So it’s like, for all the things you’re saying right now or the things right now, you want to pander or monetize fake outrage now, you’re going to pay when you actually have to show up in an election that you’re responsible for, when there are actually Republicans and Democrats.[s] and you find yourself in a purple situation where you have to find a way forward. And that’s exactly what I’ve tried to do here during my time in the Senate.
Zouves then asked: “So as we see Newsom trying to position himself as more centrist, more moderate, do you think some things from the past are going to come back to haunt him?
Fetterman responded, “Well, they’ll all go – everyone will. They’ll fold, they’ll shout at the base, and then now – then they’ll just have to try to go back or now just pretend that all these things weren’t said or done. That’s the way it works. And that’s one thing I refuse to do.”
