Apple did not say anything official on the plans to introduce an iPhone foldable, but there is no doubt that we are on the way. Rumors accumulate for years, and Mark Gurman de Bloomberg and the analyst of the Ming -Chi Kuo industry – two of the most reliable Apple pointers in the company – for example, the device will be launched in 2026.
Now, and with perhaps less than a year until the arrival of the foldable iPhone, Apple has dropped the iPhone air. It would not be a huge surprise if the iPhone fold more or less looked like two iPhone difficulties with a hinge in the middle, which means that the thinnest iPhone could give us climaxes on Apple’s foldable future.
Slimming and durability
Slimming is an absolute must with a foldable phone: nobody wants two regular -sized handsets stuck together in their pocket or bag. It is not so much a problem when a foldable is open, but when closed, any excess of bulk is much more visible – foldable phones manufacturers try to minimize the problem, literally.
The foldable Honor Magic V5 is barely 4.2 mm (0.17 inches) from front to back when open, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has exactly the same thickness. The iPhone air officially has 5.64 mm (0.22 inch) thick, excluding the bump from the camera, which beats the thickness of 7.95 mm (0.31 inch) of the ordinary iPhone 17 by significant margin.
The iPhone air is very thin.

While the foldable iPhone will probably have to become even thinner, Apple clearly goes in the right direction. Meanwhile, it also attacks another crucial characteristic of foldable phones: sustainability. Additional mobile parts and additional screens involved in a folding smartphone mean that it must resist blows and scratch, and obviously has a hinge mechanism that lasts.
The iPhone air is unique among the 2025 models to have the all new SHIELD material in ceramic 2 (a kind of ceramic glass hybrid) at the front of the phone, and the old ceramic shield material at the rear. It is a fully protected handset. Although the Pro and Pro Max models have dropped the titanium, the iPhone Air sticks to additional durability, to the point that it is in fact the most durable iPhone of all time – expect similar iPhone fold.
Redesigned internal
Apple’s launch event in September 2025 entered into detail on how the iPhone air interns had been redesigned from zero to do as much space as possible for the battery. Most of the other components have been moved to the top of the chassis, which is one of the reasons why there is only one rear camera in the air of the iPhone.
The physical niche of the SIM card has been completely abandoned in order to give the phone as much battery capacity as possible despite its thin size, and foldable phones have a similar challenge; The batteries of these devices must bring power to a tablet size screen when they are completely open.
Apple is likely to use some similar engineering innovations when it comes to designing the iPhone fold. There will be double the internal space available compared to a standard handset of the same thickness, but there are also many components to register, including the hinge mechanism.
What do you think so far?
Regarding the great unveiling of the foldable iPhone, I would not be surprised at all to see another X -ray video showing its interns and how Apple used as effective space as possible. Air iPhone required a new approach to adapt to the constraints of the form factor, just as the iPhone will bend.
What the most recent rumors say on a foldable iPhone
Lifehacker gathered the most important rumors around the iPhone folded in December, and there were many more online gossip around the device during the months that followed. This speculation dates back to a long way, pretty when Samsung began to release foldable in 2019, but it seems that the wait could end.
Gurman again faced the folder to say that we will have a foldable iPhone in 2026, followed by an iPhone from the 20th anniversary curved entirely in glass in 2027.[ll apparently have two rear cameras, one selfie camera on the main screen, and another selfie on the outer cover display. It’ll apparently be available in black and white.

Gurman has also said that Apple is working hard to minimize the crease on the iPhone Fold, and make the hinge more durable than it is on competing models. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, meanwhile, has reiterated that the foldable will use a Touch ID sensor built into the power button, iPad-style (the iPhone Fold is effectively a mini iPad, after all).
As for pricing, it’s probably a good idea to start saving now: Supply chain sources are pointing towards a starting price of $2,100-$2,500, which is a little higher than the $1,999.99 starting price of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
All of this above remains very much in the realm of rumor for the time being, and nothing is certain until Tim Cook appears on a livestream and tells us the iPhone Fold is real—but I think the iPhone Air has given us our most substantial look into the future yet.
