MLB news: Giants player has heated exchange with teammate

The San Francisco Giants got off to a rough start to 2026, and the frustrations seemed to boil over on Wednesday as they lost to the San Diego Padres.

Giants third baseman Matt Chapman made a quick play on a chopper from Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts in the bottom of the fifth inning. He had to make a quick, off-balance throw to first baseman Casey Schmitt to try to get the quick hitter.

Chapman’s throw seemed a little high, but catchable as it came off Schmitt’s glove and behind him. This allowed a runner from third base to score as the Padres extended their lead to 2-0.

The team then gathered on the mound to try to calm down. Chapman appeared saying, “Catch the damn ball” to Schmitt as the players met on the mound.

Both Schmitt and Chapman were credited with errors during the game. Chapman went heads-up in the third inning when he threw out Fernando Tatis Jr. trying to score from third base on a grounder.

San Diego ultimately pulled out a 7-1 victory, dropping San Francisco to 2-4 on the year.

Chapman and Schmitt appeared to clear the air after the game, according to NBC Bay Area.

“We’re all brothers here. It’s the heat of the moment,” Chapman told reporters. “I’ve talked to Casey before and it’s all good. I thought people would try to make a big deal out of it, but it’s baseball and things happen. We all learn from it. We’ll move on. I told him before it was kind of the heat of the moment. I just wanted to get those outs out. It happens.”

Schmitt said he’s not “crazy about it” and understands that everyone on the team has the same goal: winning games.

“That’s my guy,” he added. “He’s always been by my side and helped me with everything. That’s how it is and I should have caught the ball. We are good. We are men here and we try to win games.”

Chapman was 0-for-4 at the plate and Schmitt was 0-for-3.
