The USDA’s new guidance on the voluntary “Product of USA” claim includes a significant change from previous guidance.
The new guidance doubles down on the requirement that producers applying for coverage have documentation of “confirmatory” evidence and be prepared to submit it to USDA within 24 hours of the application.
The guidelines will be enforced by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). Some supporters of the new requirements say they will help ensure standardized food safety guidelines.
