Jonah Tong shows promise in MLB debut as Mets rout Marlins
A few months ago, a night like this did not seem possible for the dishes.
Jonah Tong was not even invited to spring training at Large League.
The first time he met the manager Carlos Mendoza, Tong was the ball in a triple-a-camp during the camp, filling a right of way as one of the beginners.
Tong started the regular season with Double-A Binghamton, where, at this point, he had only made two departures.
He was light years from the majors.
But forward for Friday evening, and Tong was on the Citi Field mound, making his debut with MLB very publicized against the Miami Marlins.
And Tong has demonstrated a large part of the promise that transformed it into one of the most popular perspectives of the dishes.
Tong gave four points (a deserved) in five rounds in the 19-9 dishes victory, withdrawing six, during a night when the dishes set a franchise record for the races in a home match. Tong granted six strokes but did not make a walk on 97 throws and won the victory.
The 22 -year -old right -hander started his debut with four goalless rounds, then allowed a simple RBI to Eric Wagaman to start the fifth. The defense of the dishes dropped from there, with consecutive errors of Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso extending the English Channel and leading to the three unpaid races.
However, Tong put an end to its inaugural outing on a high note, freeing Liam Hicks with a quick 3-2 bullet on his last throw of the night.
He was released for an ovation of a closed window crowds of 42,112 which had applauded strongly for Tong all night, including when he was heading for the enclosure of the lifts for his pre-match warm-up and when he hit Joey Wiemer during the third round for his first career K.
Tong has deployed an arsenal four steps, but he drew the most on his quick ball in the mid -90s, throwing the 61% of the time. He struck four strikers looking with this quick ball in the blink of an eye to the way the terrain can be misleading.
Behind an unusual and exaggerated delivery which strongly resembles that of Tim Lécecum, Tong led the minor leagues at the time (1.43) and the stick withdrawals (179) on 22 departures at two different levels.
Only two of these departures came to Triple -A Syracuse – where it was promoted earlier this month – but the overwhelming domination of Tong left the Little Choice Mets but to have fun to the majors.
“If you had asked me at the beginning of the year if I thought it was going to happen, I would tell you exactly what I’m going to tell you now: I’m going to be where my feet are,” Tong said Thursday when you arrived at Citi Field. “I think everything else will take care of itself.”
Helping to facilitate Tong was an offense of the dishes that showered it with immediate support. Before the start of the Marlins, Eury Perez was even recorded, the dishes led 5-0 behind a Home Run of two points by Juan Soto and an explosion of three points by Brandon Nimmo.
Alonso followed with a two-point home run against the Tyler Zuber lift to launch a second round of seven points, after which the food led, 12-0.
The previous record for food for shopping in a home game was 17 years. Friday, they finished with 18 strokes, including six circuits.
Nimmo added a sixth round solo circuit off the post for lack of the right field against the Valente Bellozo lift. Nimmo went 3 for 4 with a walk and four products produced. He now has 22 circuits – two less from his career summit.
The dishes then accumulated with a six -point rally in eighth round against Javier Sanoja, a position player signed up in the pitching service. Mark Venos did a solo circuit tour of Sanoja, and the receiver Luis Torrens added an explosion of three points.
Torrens then took the mound for the ninth, but he sold four points – including two circuits – in 1/3 of a round before the Ryne Stanek lifter obtained the last two withdrawals.
The victory maintained the food (73-62) five games behind the Philadelphia Phillies at the head of the NL, which also won on Friday. The dishes now have a five game lead for the third and final of NL Wild Card Spot on the Reds of Cincinnati, who lost on Friday.
Tong is the second Mega-Propospect promoted this month at the heart of the thrust of the playoffs, after the 24-year-old right-hander, Nolan McLean, who has a 3-0 sheet with a 0.89 MPM in Sterling pounds in three departures.
But while McLean is locked in the rotation in the future, the dishes had not been engaged in Tong beyond the beginning of Friday. But Mendoza confirmed after the match that Tong will start again.
“I think when you spend the last month of the season, you want to have the best list you may be,” said Baseball Operations President David Stearns this week. “We think Jonah has a chance to be among this.”
