A recall is underway for canned tuna sold in nine states, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Monday. Tri-Union Seafoods initially recalled the cans in February 2025 due to a packaging defect in their “easy-open” tabs. Over time, this defect can compromise the seal of the product, causing leakage or contamination by Clostridium botulinumthe bacteria that can cause botulism, which is a serious form of food poisoning. The recalled cans were quarantined, but a third-party distributor accidentally shipped them.

The recall involves two canned tuna products:

Genoa yellowfin tuna in olive oil

  • Size: 5.0 oz, pack of four
  • UPC: 4800073265
  • Can code: S84N D2L and S84N D3L
  • Expiration dates: 01/21/2028 and 01/24/2028

  • Safeway, Albertsons, Vons and Pavilions in California

Look for recalled cans of tuna in your pantry. The FDA urges customers not to use them, even if they don’t look or smell spoiled. Instead, return them for a refund or throw them away.
