TikTok’s ‘Google Maps Girl’ trend has us lost and strutting to Charli xcx

Without the GPS cards, I would probably be lost somewhere. The other day, I felt extremely proud to have driven a Citi bike from Manhattan to Brooklyn without directions. I have been living in New York for about a decade now, by the way, and this minor feat was like a major achievement.

There is a new trend on Tiktok which therefore makes fun of life for people who have reached age in the GPS era. The trend varies, but indeed, people wander on the screen – or, sometimes, make a model walk – looking at their phone, apparently lost, often like the song by Charli XCX, “Girl, so Confused” plays. Often, the subjects in question are women (get it … “girl, so confusing”). The trend, more or less, has become the trend of Google Maps Girl.

The Google Maps Girl trend, however, seems to be a variation on other Tiktok videos that use the song Charli XCX as a backdrop for a false model promenade. People will strut to rhythm, then turn to something funny, as realizing that their partner was always angry or that they forgot their vape. As with most trends, you can trace Google Maps Girl messages to a previous trend. We all simply build at the top of the online world that preceded us.
