The vehicles of federal agents appeared in the street in Evanston on Wednesday morning, and the police chief contacted the members of the municipal council of Evanston saying that the agents carried out a criminal mandate, according to an email obtained by Pioneer Press.

Chef Schenita Stewart said Homeland Security informed the police service that federal agents were in the Church Street and Brown Avenue district. A police commander has arrived but did not see the vehicles at that time, she said.

The mayor of Evanston, Daniel Biss, announced on Monday that an head of the Illinois state told him that American immigration and customs application would come in the suburbs for repression in the coming days.

Chef Stewart wrote that federal agents told Evanston police service that they would inform them of future operations in Evanston.

Federal vehicles “have received a parking quote from the parking lot,” she wrote. In Evanston, parking tickets are written by a division of the separate city and not by the police service, according to police commander Scott Sophie.

A resident had reported suspicious vehicles in the region, including a Honda Blue Honda SUV, a black Ford SUV and a black Jeep SUV.

Pioneer Press obtained the electronic mail from the police chief via the law on information.

Sophie checked the authenticity of Stewart’s letter to the municipal council.

“A representative of Homeland Security said they were in Evanston,” Sophie wrote on Wednesday afternoon. “Chef Stewart informed his representative that Evanston police would not contribute to any questions related to civil immigration and that our staff will not interfere with the work of federal officers. No other information has been provided to us, and no updates since this initial contact. ”

He added that the ministry cannot confirm the number of agents in Evanston or for which agency they work.

Evanston police were not informed of any arrest on Wednesday and had no other contact with federal agents, said Sophie. The EPD did not help any operation or investigation, he added.

The police department informed an official of the Evanston canton high school in the incident, according to Sophie.

Stewart asked the council to “remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity at the EPD”.
