Matt Hancock criticises ‘wholly naive’ and ‘hostile’ Covid inquiry

Matt Hancock defended government agreements to buy personal protective equipment (PPE) during the pandemic, saying that the country was in a “desperate situation” at the time.

In a bad mood session during the cocvid investigation, the former Secretary of Health has repeatedly criticized the questioning line describing it as “naive”, “hostile” and “inappropriate”.

He said he was “not surprised” when a so-called VIP Lane for EPI suppliers with a political connection was established, describing it as a “standard practice”.

At one point, the president of the investigation, the Baroness Hallett, intervened, telling Hancock that it was her job to learn lessons for any future pandemic.

Hancock appeared for the fifth time in the COVVID survey, which is now investigating the purchase and distribution of 15 billion pounds of EPI in the pandemic, as well as test kits, fans and other medical equipment.

He defended a public “call for arms” made at a Downing Street press conference on April 10, 2020 so that more British EPP suppliers are manifested.

The investigation heard previous witnesses, including the former commercial director of the SIR Gareth Rhys Williams government, that the appeal was counterproductive, leading to a large number of approaches that threatened to overwhelm the system.

“We were radically short of Epi [at the time] And the country was about to exhaust the national level, “Hancock told the investigation.

“No one testified that the call for arms led to something other than more PPE … so I’m next to it.”

The former Secretary of Health was then questioned on the high priority route, or VIP Lane, which was created by officials of the Ministry of Health in England to help manage the offers by prioritizing those mentioned by a deputy, member of the Chamber of Lords or senior officials.

Hancock said he was not involved in the design of the system, which he said had made him the target of a “huge amount of conspiracy theories”.

The investigation put into service an expert report from Professor Albert Sanchez-Graells, professor of law at the University of Bristol, who criticized the approach and found no evidence of a similar prioritization in Scotland, in Wales, Northern Ireland or other countries of the world.

“It’s good to have academics to write articles on these kinds of things … but you have to understand what it was [at the time]”Said Hancock.

“The pressure to save lives was intense, but the reality was the same that high quality offers would be sent to senior decision -makers, and you had to have a process to deal with it.”

He said other countries would have had their own systems to prioritize PPE and medical equipment in different ways.

Hancock was then questioned on a contract granted to a company managed by Alex Bourne, who had a pub in his constituency of West Suffolk, to do bottles for wearing tests.

The emails show that Hancock transmitted the communications of Mr. Bourne to the Minister of Health at the time, Lord Bethell, describing his analysis of the wider test system as a “very interesting criticism” of a “very impressive guy”.

In interrogation, Hancock said that he had acted with “impeccable behavior” at the time and accused the chief council of the Richard Wald KC investigation of having selected Cerry a “couple of messages” which “have” the most tabloid interest “.

He said that the investigation had followed a “totally naive” questioning line by ignoring the reality of the situation at the time, while making “terribly pejorative” statements which were “totally inappropriate”.

At the end of his testimony, Baroness Hallett told Hancock that he “was not the first and that I will not be the last witness to think that the investigation is to criticize people”.

“My goal is to investigate what happened, to explore public concerns, to bring people to answer these areas and try to find recommendations that will save lives,” she added.
