A federal judge of Illinois refused to immediately prevent the Trump administration from deploying troops of the National Guard in the State, giving the administration until Wednesday evening to respond to the trial brought by Illinois and Chicago.

The state of Illinois and the city of Chicago brought in federal legal action on Monday against the Trump administration for its efforts aimed at deploying troops of the national guard in the state, one day after a federal judge prevented any member of the federalized guard from deploying in Oregon.

The Illinois and Chicago asked the judge to prevent the Trump administration from federalizing the Illinois National Guard and sending members of the guard from other states to Illinois, including Texas.

But the American district judge April Perry gave the Trump administration until 11:59 p.m. Wednesday to meet the trial and set a date for the pleadings at 11 a.m. Thursday.

In the trial, the Attorney General of Illinois, Kwame Raoul, wrote: “The American people, whatever place where they live, should not live under the threat of an occupation by the American army, especially not simply because the management of his city or his state no longer has the favor of a president. »»

It is the last turning point of a three -day dizzying saga during which the Trump administration ordered the federalization of the troops of the National Guard in Illinois and Oregon, as well as the sending of members of the National Guard of other states.

President Trump has promised for weeks to send members of the National Guard to Chicago and Portland, cities which he describes as invaded by crime and who need the help of the Federal police. The administration also said that troops would be used to protect federal immigration agents and federal property.

The local and state leaders of Illinois and Oregon said that the national guard troops were not necessary and that Trump abused his power. Violent crimes are at their lowest in Chicago, as well as in other cities that Trump has threatened to deploy the National Guard.

Oregon’s governor Tina Kotek said on Sunday evening that “Trump’s actions are an effort to occupy and encourage cities and states that do not share his policy, and I think we should expect him to continue to push the limits of his authority”.

The Trump administration’s attempts to deploy the National Guard in the two cities led by Democrats arise after sending members of the guard to Los Angeles and Washington, DC, earlier this year.

Chicago continued Trump as she prepares to send troops

The trial brought on Monday argues that the Trump administration can only federalize the national guard of a state in the event of an invasion, rebellion or if the federal government cannot apply federal laws – and that none of these circumstances exists.

Christopher Wells, lawyer at the Office of the Attorney General of Illinois, said at the hearing on Monday that the Trump administration made a “concerted effort to target the disadvantaged jurisdictions that the president does not like” and that the court “must put an end to it,” said Wbez.

During the weekend, Trump authorized the deployment of at least 300 members of the Illinois National Guard. A pentagon memo consulted by NPR suggested that the troops would be used to protect federal property as well as American immigration and customs and federal protection and other federal employees.

In addition, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he had approved Trump’s request to call 400 members of the Texas National Guard, some of which should go to Illinois.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a democrat who came up against Trump, castigated the actions of the administration this weekend.

“We must now start to call this what it is: Trump’s invasion,” said Pritzker in an article on X. “It started with federal agents, this will soon include the deployment of federalized members of the Illinois National Guard against our will, and this will now imply the sending of military troops of another state.”

On Saturday, the spokesperson for the White House, Abigail Jackson, said in a statement that Trump had federalized the troops of the Illinois National Guard.[a]In the midst of the violent riots and the anarchy in progress “in Chicago in order to” protect agents and federal goods “, reported Wbez.

A judge blocks the deployment of the National Guard in Oregon

In Oregon, a federal judge temporarily prevented the Trump administration on Sunday evening from sending members of the National Guard of any other state to Oregon.

This decision followed the announcement that Trump had sent members of the California National Guard to Oregon and also obtained Texas approval to do the same.

Oregon and Portland – as well as the state of California – seized the court and asked the American district judge Karin J. Immergut to block this decision. It was a day after she temporarily prevented Trump from federalizing the Oregon National Guard.

“I am certainly disturbed to learn now that California and Texas are sent to Oregon, which seems to be in direct contradiction with my order,” wrote Immergut, who was appointed to the federal magistracy by Trump in 2019, in his order, reported the Oregon Public Broadcasting.

The Attorney General of Oregon, Dan Rayfield, praised the judge’s decision on Sunday evening. “The president cannot continue to play the mole with the childcare units of the various states to circumvent the orders of the courts and the rule of law,” he wrote on X.

The press secretary of the White House, Karoline Leavitt, said on Monday afternoon during a press briefing that the administration appealed to the decision and that the ICE facilities had been “besieged” by the demonstrators.

“These people are not there to demonstrate peacefully,” she said. “They are there to sow chaos and chaos.”

Under the day earlier, Immergut had ruled that the Trump administration had not reached the threshold required to declare that the recent demonstrations before the ICE of Portland installations constituted a rebellion, saying that these demonstrations had generally gathered less than 30 people and were “largely calm”.

The Trump administration had federalized 200 members of the Oregon National Guard on Sunday, according to a note sent to Kotek by the Ministry of Defense.

Trump said after the judge’s initial decision that he had not seen the order blocking the federalization of the Oregon National Guard, but that “this judge should be ashamed of himself”.
