The other prisoners reportedly try to keep Sarkozy awake all night in his cell, whose window overlooks the prison courtyard.

On Wednesday, a source at the Ministry of the Interior confirmed having ordered two agents from the Personality Protection Service, the SDLP, to occupy “24 hours a day the cell next to that of the former president”.

The police officers posted 24 hours a day next to Sarkozy also heard the nighttime cries.

Regular La Santé men complained about the arrival of Sarkozy’s own special guards – with one senior prison guard revealing there was widespread anger among staff.

He explained: “We are all highly professional officers and do not need police support.

“Mr. Sarkozy is in his own cell, where he is perfectly safe. He sleeps there, eats, showers and only goes out for an hour a day for a walk.”

But Laurent Nuñez, the French interior minister, said he had decided to send two police officers to the prison to deal with Sarkozy.

He said Wednesday it was a “decision to ensure his safety.”

Eric Ciotti, president of Sarkozy conservative partyRepublicans said they were very concerned about the death threats.

Mr. Ciotti declared: “It is entirely legitimate that the security of a former President of the Republic be ensured everywhere, at all times, in all places.

“Especially since the threats against him will be much greater in the circles in which he operates.

“I saw images of him being threatened with death upon his arrival. His safety must be guaranteed.

“This incarceration is a terrible ordeal for his family. I think of the ordeal they are going through.”

The video posted online refers to Sarkozy, but also to Ziad Takieddine – a former Lebanese arms trafficker wanted in Sarkozy’s case, but who died in mysterious circumstances late last month.

Takieddine was accused of being the intermediary between Gaddafi and Sarkozy.

RAF and French air force jets carried out the massive bombing campaign in 2011 that ended with Gaddafi being killed by a mob.

David Cameron was British Prime Minister at the time and visited Libya with Sarkozy.

Some claim Sarkozy wanted his old friend and ally dead because of his ability to produce incriminating evidence – hence the promise to “avenge Gaddafi”.

He was incarcerated in the notorious prison at 9:40 a.m., while other inmates mocked him by chanting “Welcome Sarko!” and “Sarkozy is here!” “.

Sarkozy was convicted of accepting millions in illegal cash from Gaddafi in order to win power for five years, between 2007 and 2012.

He is currently serving a five-year sentence, but has also been convicted of two previous offenses and is the subject of further criminal investigations.

Those who spent time at La Santé – which means Health – include notorious terrorists and armed robbers such as Carlos the Jackal (Illich Ramírez Sanchez) and armed robber Jacques Mesrine.

Sarkozy is now the first French head of state to go to prison since Marshal Philippe Pétain – the Nazi wartime collaborator.

Sarkozy will spend most of his time alone in a 29-square-foot cell equipped with a shower, bed, small desk, landline and television, costing him the equivalent of £13 a month to watch.

He will be allowed one solitary walk per day, alone, in a small courtyard, but will not have a cell phone.

Sarkozy was Minister of the Interior Francewhen his tough politics earned him the nickname “The Top Cop.”

He once claimed that the “scum” of young offenders on housing estates should be “washed away by a jet of water”.

This past makes him an extremely vulnerable prisoner.

Christophe Ingrain, another of Sarkozy’s lawyers, said he was appealing against the jailing, but it will be at least a month before the appeal is heard.

Mr. Ingrain said: “He takes it upon himself to ensure that no one can feel the indignation and anger he feels at this injustice. Humanly, it is an extremely difficult ordeal.”

Sarkozy was also found guilty of attempted bribery of a judge and illicit campaign financing, following separate trials.

Carla Bruni herself is accused of taking part in a £4 million campaign dubbed “Operation Save Sarko” – a complex and illegal plan to try to keep her husband out of prison.
