On August 1, Trump said that he had ordered his team to dismiss the former BLS commissioner, Erika Mcentarfer, after the agency reported that the United States added that 73,000 non-agricultural payroll jobs in July. “I am happy to announce that I note economist highly respected, Dr. Ej Antoni, as the next commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Our economy is booming, and EJ will ensure that the figures published are honest and exact. I know that EJ Antoni will do incredible work in this new role. Congratulations EJ! ” Trump wrote.

In Trump’s announcement, who dismissed Mcentarfer, he accused him of “simulated job figures” before the 2024 presidential election to “stimulate” the chance of former vice-president Kamala Harris to win.
Antoni, the chief economist of the Heritage Foundation, previously criticized the BLS employment numbers on his X account, affirming in May that the reports often looked like a “random number generator”.
The limited growth in the BLS report in July follows revisions downwards of 258,000 jobs combined for May and June, according to a press release from the White House. The White House also said that the BLS had revised employment data throughout 2024 under the Biden administration, in particular the reduction in the growth of the reference payroll for the year ending in March 2024 by 818,000 jobs – the second reference revision recorded ever registered.
“A long story of inaccuracies and incompetence by Erika Mcentarfer, the former commissioner of the Labor Statistics Office, has completely eroded public confidence in the government agency responsible for disseminating the key data used by decision -makers and businesses to make significant decisions,” said the White House press release.
