‘Pathetic… Capitulation and a Betrayal’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) called Senate Democrats’ deal with Republicans to reopen the government “pathetic,” accusing them of betraying “American workers” after failing to secure an extension of Obamacare’s enhanced premium subsidies.
Newsom, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, took to social media Sunday evening after eight Democrats voted with Republicans in a procedural vote to allow a continuing resolution (CR) funding the government to move forward.
“Pathetic,” he wrote from his personal X account.
Its press service also called the capitulation of the Democrats “pathetic”:
“This is not a deal,” his office added. “This is surrender. Don’t bend the knee!”
Newsom shared more of his thoughts on his official gubernatorial account:
“Tonight’s Senate vote to shut down the federal government should have been a moment of strength. Instead, we saw a capitulation and betrayal of American workers,” Newsom wrote. “The American people need more from their leaders. »
Despite admitting that Democrats had the power to keep the government shut down, Newsom has spent the past 41 days placing blame on President Donald Trump and Republicans.
A few hours earlier Sunday, Newsom appeared on CNN to call the Trump administration “disgraceful,” accusing it of using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, as a “bargaining chip to end this shutdown.”
Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), and Tim Kaine (D-VA) left Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and joined Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NM), Angus King (I-ME), and John Fetterman (D-PA), who previously voted to allow the House-passed CR to advance.
Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) was the only “no” vote on the Republican side.
The motion was adopted without a single vote and will allow a vote on a clean CR to finance the government until January 30, 2026 with a pack of “relatively non-controversial appropriations bills” stretching throughout the fiscal year, Breitbart News’ Bradley Jaye reported.
Instead of Democrats receiving a guarantee on an extension of the enhanced Covid-era Obamacare premium subsidies as they demanded, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) only promised a vote. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has not committed to putting it up for a vote in his chamber.
